Job Overview

The Research Informatics & Data Science Manager provides operational leadership for the Research Informatics & Data Science team in the Colorado Child Health Research Institute and Analytics Resource Center at Children's Hospital Colorado, including planning, organizing, analyzing and implementing data management, research informatics and data science initiatives. This role leads a team of Research Informatics Analysts, Developers, Engineers and Data Scientists and manages research informatics projects within research networks, including cross-institutional coordination. This role will collaborate closely with other teams in our Colorado Child Health Research Institute, Analytics Research Center, Information Technology, Information Security, Compliance and Legal. Successful candidates will have strong knowledge of research methods, research informatics, research design and experience with managing analysts, engineers and/or data scientists.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION - Bachelor's degree in related field, such as Public Health, Informatics, Epidemiology, Data Science or Computer Science.

EXPERIENCE - Minimum of Five (5) years of related experience is required.

EQUIVALENCY - Professional experience, beyond requirements, in a related field may substitute for a Bachelor degree requirement on a year for year basis.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

-Oversees the design, build, support, management, maintenance and optimization of analytics, data science and research platforms, infrastructure and applications.

-Manages day-to-day availability of research, analytics and data science systems per service line agreements across the organization through management of vendors, staff, performance, and user satisfaction. Prepares and maintains technical specifications and related documentation to secure procedures and prevent system failure, including participation in design and implementation of the IT disaster recovery plan.

-Builds and manages a team of analysts, developers, programmers who facilitate the analytics processes for the organization, campus and multi-center data and research networks, including evaluating resources, identifying staff developmental needs, prioritizing work and ensuring necessary resources are available to help staff grow and develop. Mentors staff to achieved identified goals.

-Works with key stakeholders, leadership and team members to support strategy, approach, scope and timelines for small and large projects. Manages multiple projects and teams simultaneously, prioritizing workload and resolving conflicts for the entire team effectively.

-Provides leadership for the ARC and Research Institute in the following areas: Research Informatics Infrastructure, Data Science Infrastructure, Research Administrative Systems, Data Networks and campus-wide partnerships.

-Creates standards for Research Informatics and Data Science processes, storage and data exchange, ensuring alignment with best practices, applicable regulations, standards and policies, and enforces these standards, holds team accountable.

-Provides leadership to identify, quantify, implement and measure specific departmental improvement initiatives to improve efficiencies and in anticipation of the changing landscape of research informatics and data science technologies and methodologies. Participates in governance activities around Research Informatics and Data Science processes.

-Assists in the development, implementation and assessment of long and short range goals and objectives as well as major plans and programs related to Research Informatics & Data Science service delivery. Oversees that goals and performance targets are linked to CHCO's strategic goals and campus-wide initiatives. Collaborates with peers to ensure that department and organizational goals are achieved and sustained while removing barriers to success.

-Works with supervisors and managers within department to develop and strengthen the customer service approach. Introduces standards, policies and practices which support a culture of excellence.

-Performs GAP analysis of current technology platforms and future needs. Evaluates effectiveness of systems and offers solutions that support the needs of clinical and business customers.

-Manages technology vendors and consultant relationships. Reviews and assesses service requests and make recommendations on hardware and software purchases. Negotiate with vendors to ensure cost effective procurement decisions.

-Develops, provides estimates and maintains budgets for department, grants and projects. Designs processes to ensure compliance with billing and invoicing. Oversees invoicing for fee for service work. Maximizes invoicing and priority of work performed by team to improve costs offset by external funding sources.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated goals and objectives for function.

Complexity: Work assignment is unstructured, and leader is responsible for implementing and managing a variety of objectives, resources, and initiatives to achieve the goals of the function. Duties performed include operational planning; developing standards, priorities, guidelines, processes, measurement (evaluation) systems; implementation of production and performance management standards; and allocating resources. Work is tactical and operational in nature.

Decision Making: Employee is responsible for planning, organizing, allocating resources, ensuring compliance with procedures, and achieving the objectives of the function.

Communications: Communication at this level is primarily internally focused and involves establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with team members, peers, directors, and executives. Provides guidance and interpretation of the enterprise's policies, procedures, and standards. Provides information to higher-level directors and executives.

Supervision Received: Responsible for achieving the objectives of function within the scope of established guidelines. Employee is expected to resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $117,859.15 to $176,788.73
Hourly Salary Range: $56.66 to $84.99
