Job Summary:

The Jason Peters Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (https://sites.google.com/wisc.edu/jasonpeterslab/home) is seeking a candidate for our Research Specialist position to help us address two of the greatest threats to global health: antibiotic resistance and climate change. In the Peters Lab, we develop cutting edge approaches to bacterial genetics and apply them at the genome-scale to identify new weaknesses in pathogens and to improve the efficiency of biofuel production strains. Our work is funded by multiple agencies (e.g., NIH, ARPA-H and DOE), and we collaborate with scientists at the top of their fields.

The Research Specialist will work under the direction of senior personnel to facilitate construction of novel, CRISPR-based genetic tools and deploy them in high-throughput screens to understand bacterial gene function in the context of antibiotics and biofuel production stress. Routine research in the lab involves genetic manipulation of model (e.g., Escherichia coli K-12) and non-model (e.g., Acinetobacter baumannii, and Zymomonas mobilis) bacteria, molecular cloning, design and testing of CRISPR tools, competitive fitness assays of mutant strain libraries, DNA- or RNA-sequencing, and computational analysis of sequence data. Additional roles of the Research Specialist will include assisting senior personnel with lab organization and management tasks including inventory, ordering, biological and chemical safety, equipment maintenance, organization of protocols and inventories, and supervision of student workers.


Responsibilities:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.

  • 55% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, or related field.


Qualifications:

At least one year experience in a research lab is required. Additional experience preferred.

Experience in several of the following areas is preferred:
-Cultivation of bacteria
-Genetic manipulation of bacteria
-Anaerobic chamber use
-Biosafety level 2 work
-Molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning, nucleic acid purification, etc.)
-DNA sequencing and analysis
-Computational work (especially: MS Excel, Adobe Illustrator, Unix, R, Python)
-Lab organization and management
-Lab equipment maintenance

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $45,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off, competitive insurances and savings accounts, and retirement benefits through the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).

Qualified candidates can expect to earn between $45,000 and $49,000. Highly qualified candidates may earn between $49,000 and $53,000. Exceptionally qualified candidates with additional education and/or experience, and/or specialized skills may be considered at a higher salary level.
