Job Overview

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for an Assistant Professor-Educator, intended to begin in August 2025. Candidates must have an Area of Specialization (AOS) or Area of Competence (AOC) in any area of applied ethics, and the selected candidate will assume a leadership role at the Cincinnati Ethics Center.

This is a joint position between the Philosophy Department (.67 FTE) and the Cincinnati Ethics Center (.33 FTE). In recognition of intellectual and administrative leadership of the Cincinnati Ethics Center, the normal Educator teaching 3-3 load is expected to be reduced to a 2-2 teaching load with standard service responsibilities in the Philosophy Department.

Educator faculty at the University of Cincinnati hold teaching-focused appointments that are not eligible for tenure. Educator faculty are eligible for reappointment and for promotion, and receive benefits including, e.g., medical and dental insurance, financial support for professional development, and paid academic leaves. Educator faculty are full-time faculty who are represented by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). An active research program is not required for the position, nor for reappointment or promotion; however, research activity can contribute to the professional activities considered for reappointment and promotion.

About the Department

The Department of Philosophy is a PhD-granting department with strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of cognitive science, and moral psychology; we are also cultivating strength in applied ethics and social philosophy. We comprise 12 full-time faculty, more than 25 active PhD students, and affiliated faculty across the University.

The Cincinnati Ethics Center (CEC), founded in 2022, is a university-wide institute that focuses on developing robust ethics education and leadership development initiatives to improve the quality of life of Greater Cincinnatians via transformative moral reasoning and ethical leadership. The Center administers collegiate and high-school Ethics Bowl teams and a range of K-12 and public outreach initiatives, as well as ethics-related activities across the university. The CEC recently received donations summing to over $2 million to support its programs.

The University of Cincinnati (UC) is a public research and teaching university located in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio (USA). The University is a Carnegie R-1 institution that enrolls over 52,000 students and competes in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA collegiate sports. The city of Cincinnati is located in southwest Ohio. Cincinnati has a metro population of over 2.25 million people and is served by the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).

Essential Functions

* Teach undergraduate courses in Philosophy, including but not limited to general education courses, introductory courses, and upper-level undergraduate courses for both Philosophy and interdisciplinary majors. May also contribute to graduate teaching and other teaching needs as they arise, such as in the history of philosophy, logic, or world philosophy.

* Supervise and mentor graduate student teaching assistants.

* Take an active leadership and operational role at the Cincinnati Ethics Center, such as but not limited to providing assistance in directing Philosophy for Children (P4C) projects and high school and college ethics bowl programs.

* Contribute service to the Philosophy Department, College of Arts & Sciences, Cincinnati Ethics Center, University of Cincinnati, and profession, such as by serving on committees and engaging in public outreach.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to effective date of appointment, all of the following:

* A PhD in Philosophy or a closely related discipline

* An Area of Specialization (AOS) or Area of Competence (AOC) in any area of applied ethics
