Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Center for Energy Research and Technology ( CERT) Director's primary responsibilities include developing the Center's overall research agenda; identifying potential new research topics and building teams to pursue research opportunities and prepare analytic papers and policy briefs; conducting original research; organizing issue-focused meetings, conferences, and other events to inform the academic and public community about the Center's research agenda and accomplishments; and, communicating research findings to a range of audiences toward shaping public policy. The Director shall be motivated yet flexible, diplomatic, creative, trustworthy, a good team player, and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. The Director shall establish and sustain a strong externally funded research program in Architectural Engineering and produce an excellent record of scholarly publication; bring pedagogical skills to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; supervise MS and Ph.D. theses; and provide service to the university and its units, to the state and regional community, as well as to the appropriate professional organizations.
The CERT Director shall provide strategic and executive leadership of the Center and will report to the Chair of the Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering ( CAEE) Department. The Director is responsible for the administration and management of ongoing operations of CERT and its programs and resources; development and coordination of independent, interdisciplinary, and cooperative research programs; forecasting and identification of new potential lines of research in cooperation with industry and other research stakeholders; establishment of research priorities; oversight and management of the budget; formulation of long and short range plans for use of human and financial resources; development, maintenance, and improvement of critical laboratory facilities; generation of external grant and contract support to supplement the base budget of CERT; reporting of activities of CERT and the results of its research; promotion and maintenance of effective relations with the community and government; and maintenance of productive administrative relations at North Carolina A&T State University ( NCA& TSU) and with other units of the University of North Carolina system.

The CERT Director will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses; conduct research; advise, mentor, and recruit students; develop curriculum, conducting scholarly activities, and perform other activities as expected. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, engaging in accreditation procedures, program assessment, and service to the department, College, and University as needed.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the individual selected for this position, the position will be either a 9-month tenure track faculty position with a stipend or a 12-month administrative staff position.

The Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering ( CAEE) Department is responsible for implementing and assessing its programs in civil and architectural engineering. The CAEE department offers BS and MS programs. The CAEE department has approximately 367 undergraduate and graduate students. The Center for Energy Research and Technology ( CERT) at North Carolina A&T State University
is an interdisciplinary energy research center, designed to foster collaborative research and development of new energy-related technologies; and to aid existing infrastructures in improving their energy utilization. Grounded in engineering and built-environment sciences, CERT focuses on basic and applied research, outreach, extension, and education activities relating to renewable energy, energy efficiency, alternative fuels and vehicle technologies, sustainable green building, and the environment.
Minimum Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Engineering, or a field relevant to renewable energy utilization, from a regionally accredited university.
  • A minimum of five years experience, in management and administration within a public or private applied research facility.
  • A demonstrated record of applied research accomplishments with prior research experience in energy, renewable energy, water, or related natural resource or environmentally-based industries.
  • A proven record of administrative leadership and managerial and budgetary experience.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • An established record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equal opportunity and diversity/multicultural issues.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • A record of successful leadership in procuring and completing research grants and contracts in energy-relevant arenas from public and private sources.
  • Demonstrated support of the academic and research mission of a land grant university.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • A record of working effectively with a diverse and multi-disciplinary faculty, staff, student body and other units of the University.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability, and ability to look ahead and identify developing areas.
  • A record of supportive advocacy, and creative, consultative leadership.
  • A record of leadership or management experience in an industrial setting.
  • Experience in protecting intellectual property, including negotiating instruments to commercialize research, such as patents, licenses, sales, and royalty agreements.
  • A record of working effectively with a diverse and multi-disciplinary faculty, staff, student body and other units of the University.
  • A record of administrative support for the importance of teaching, advising, scholarship, and applied research.
  • Experience and knowledge in natural resource sciences or engineering, renewable energy, and/or water quality industries.
  • A record of developing external relations with the public and private sectors, and in particular legislative bodies and governmental agencies.
  • A record of facilitating the advancement of fundamental research through development to commercialization.
  • Experience in connecting research facilities and professionals with students and the business community to create productive, collaborative business environments.
  • A record of promoting and increasing diversity.
  • One plus year of teaching, research, and service experience including but not limited to research proposal writing, technical journals/proceedings publications, and professional services for national agencies or international journals.
