Job Description

The Department of Art & Design at the University of Missouri - St. Louis invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor of Graphic Design commencing Fall 2025. We seek a leader, passionate student mentor, and generous colleague who will contribute to, support, and help advance our program.

Housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department offers the BFA in Graphic Design, Studio Practice, and Art Education to more than 130 majors through a well-established and progressive curriculum. As the metropolitan, land-grant, research institution serving the most diverse and economically important region in Missouri, the University of Missouri - St. Louis delivers exceptional education, research and engagement experiences that inform, prepare, challenge and inspire our students and community alike.

The successful candidate will contribute to a well-established curriculum in Graphic Design and may develop new coursework in areas of their unique expertise. They will demonstrate the ability to teach Graphic Design skills that may include fundamentals of design, branding, typography, web design/UX, motion graphics, design entrepreneurship, and illustration. Willingness to participate in pedagogical innovation and curriculum development is an important quality of strong candidates, who will creatively collaborate across disciplines and departments to enhance the innovative offerings of Graphic Design, especially in areas of AI, digital media and visual storytelling. While the primary workload of this candidate will be teaching, NTT faculty members with a teaching emphasis are eligible for funding and provided many opportunities to support critical and technological innovations in teaching and learning. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills, a collegial mindset, and a potential for future leadership in the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

80% teaching (typically a 4/4 teaching load)
20% service

  • Develop and teach coursework in traditional and innovative approaches to Graphic Design
  • Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive department and classroom environment
  • Support student success through mentorship and effective teaching practices using traditional, flexible, and digital delivery methods
  • Collaborate with faculty and departmental leadership to maintain and develop course curricula
  • Perform service to the department, college, and university
  • Perform other duties as designated by the Department Chair
  • Willingness to participate in recruitment activity, portfolio review, and retention efforts

Qualifications

Minimum/Required:

  • MFA in Graphic Design, M.Des. with a minimum of 60 hours of graduate work, or equivalent terminal degree in Visual Communication Design, Interaction Design, or closely related discipline.
  • Applicants who will be completing their terminal degree before August 2025 and who otherwise meet minimum requirements are encouraged to apply; however, completion of the degree is required prior to the start of the appointment.
  • Evidence of proficiency with industry standard software/hardware

Preferred/Desired

  • Experience teaching college-level courses beyond the TA
  • Track record of cross-disciplinary collaborations
  • Strength teaching in traditional and innovative mediums
  • Strength in typography, visual storytelling, User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI)
  • Professional design portfolio
