This is a 2-3 year 100% Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

This position requires ability to travel regularly, including spending time at sea.

DESCRIPTION

Since 1949, Scripps has partnered with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) on the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) program. CalCOFI is the longest-running ocean and living marine resource observation program in the US and provides data to assess and manage major fisheries off the coast of California (sardine, anchovy, rockfish, among others). Each season, CalCOFI surveys California's marine environment living resources (from microbes to whales), and monitors indicators of ocean and environmental change.

The CalCOFI Director plays an essential role as the lead Principal Investigator and is the point of contact for the program. This position will be tasked with a wide range of responsibilities which includes oversight and implementation of the program as well as annual grant writing and reporting. The Director also collaborates with the broader academic and management community on the design or revision of CalCOFI's monitoring strategies to ensure that the program stays at the forefront of scientific research and environmental management.

In addition to these tasks, the Director will contribute intellectually to both scientific and management publications to help advance knowledge in the field. The role also includes networking and promoting the program, not just within the region but also on a national and international scale.

The Director is responsible for articulating the long-term vision and goals of CalCOFI, providing clear direction for its future. They will need to manage the ongoing operations of the program, which will include overseeing a large research and operational budget to ensure that the goals are met. The Director will need to use highly specialized expertise in research-specific concepts and objectives.

The Director will also need to facilitate national and international conferences or seminars annually. These events will provide the scientific community with the latest developments in the program and related areas.

This comprehensive position requires a deep commitment to the program's success and a proactive approach to leadership and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Academic background and recognized expertise in multiple disciplines of research. PhD in a scientific discipline relevant to the CalCOFI goals, or a comparable combination of education and professional experience, including extensive knowledge of national and international science and environmental issues with an understanding of ship-based observing and research programs.

  • Significant experience in academic administration and garnering federal, state, and philanthropic research awards

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agenda

  • Management experience in academic and/or government agencies, including demonstrated executive-level business management skills and expertise in contract negotiations and financial oversight.

  • Expert ability to work with a dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff, and students, employing high-level negotiation and strategic skills while managing complex partnerships and driving the success of interdisciplinary research initiatives and institutional goals

  • Known for outstanding oral and written communication abilities, engaging effectively with a wide range of audiences, including fellow researchers, program managers, industrial partners, and the media.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $145,200 - $289,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $69.54 - $138.41

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
