Respiratory Therapy Manager

Scope of Position

The Respiratory Therapy Manager assists with planning and coordinating all the activities of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centers Respiratory Therapy Department. Establish respiratory therapy services operational strategies by evaluating trends, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies by, but not limited to designing systems, accumulating resources, resolving problems, and facilitating change. Additionally, the Respiratory Therapy Manager collaborates with the medical director, administration, and system colleagues in the development and implementation of department goals, proactively identifies best practices and regulation changes in the field, identifies staffing needs and oversees recruiting, hiring, retention, terminating, disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, and scheduling. Reviews financial data and responsible for developing action plans, measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances. Updates respiratory job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

The Respiratory Therapy department provides all types of respiratory care including respiratory therapy treatments, oxygen and humidity therapy, mechanical ventilation, pulmonary function testing and diagnostic bronchoscopies, and whole blood analysis across the enterprise.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Respiratory Therapy Department as assigned by the Associate Director of Respiratory Therapy. This includes continually striving to improve the quality of services offered, in accordance with the hospitals mission and strategic plan while assuring that all regulatory requirements are met. This position will be responsible for the management of staff which provides all types of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

40% - Staff Development and Management

  • Responsible for facilitating completion of goal development, strategic planning, and evaluation of goal achievement for direct reports.
  • Assures staff skill competency including the completion of mandatary educational and health requirements
  • Provide necessary counseling and education for staff including problem solving, conflict resolution, and issuance of corrective action
  • Assists in interviewing and hiring staff

40% - Daily Operation Maintenance

  • Evaluates equipment for purchase including direct communication with vendors, senior leadership, capital budget requests, etc.
  • Assures adequate stock for respiratory equipment (supplies, medications, medical units) while complying with budgetary guidelines
  • Plans or initiates cost-saving initiatives
  • Assist in the evaluation and review of budget variances and justifies them with corrections and adjustments as indicated
  • Assist in development of operational and capital budgets
  • Assist in maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Facilitates effective use of time, people, materials, and financial resources
  • Attends meetings with physicians, nurses, respiratory staff, managers and other multi-disciplinary groups

10% - Policies and Procedures

  • Assures Respiratory Therapy policies and procedures are up-to-date and makes the necessary changes for review submission
  • Assists with monthly safety reporting

5% - Project Management

  • Assumes the leadership role in identifying and correcting factors contributing to problematic outcomes (patient care and services)
  • Collaborates with necessary individuals (vendors, physicians, etc.) for effective execution and implementation of new equipment and processes
  • Demonstrates dependability in meeting target dates for reports and project completion

5% - Financial Reviews and analysis

  • Monitors Bi-weekly productivity and creates action plans
  • Monitors financial metrics and creates/documents action plans
  • Assist in the evaluation and review of budget variances and justifies them with corrections and adjustments as indicated
  • Update financial reports
  • Report out, if needed, at business unit meetings

Organizational Expectations Practices within the hospital policies and procedures. Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire: Current respiratory therapy license from the Ohio State Medical Board. Bachelors degree required, preferably in Respiratory Therapy. Masters degree preferred.

Successful completion of RRT examination offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care and minimum of 5 years working experience as a Respiratory Therapist. Minimum of 2 years leadership experience preferred.

On going: Must comply with State Medical Board of Ohio licensure laws and rules. Stays current on the trends and science of Respiratory Therapy. Stays current on healthcare management trends.

Job Relationships

Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises per departmental organizational structure.

Contacts: Daily verbal, written, phone and e-mail communication with all levels of administrators, managers and physicians across the enterprise. Occasional (weekly/monthly) verbal, written, and phone communication with instructors in the Respiratory Therapy educational programs. Occasional (weekly/monthly) verbal, written and phone communication with Vendors.

Responsible to: Associate Director of Respiratory Therapy

Physical/Visual/Mental Requirements

Lifting, carrying, pulling of objects weighing between 30-80 lbs (i.e. ventilators, tanks, monitors).

Standing, walking, climbing, stooping, pulling (i.e. patients, stairs/ramps, tubing changes, bagging)

Work Environment

The work involves risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, additional safety education and/or health risk monitoring, e.g. working around carts, sharps, chemicals and infectious diseases. Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, shields.
