Job Summary

The Undergraduate Assistant Residential Experience Coordinator (UAREC) is a part-time, live-in undergraduate student staff member of Housing and Residential Experience at Florida International University. The UAREC reports to a Residential Experience Coordinator and aids in the operation of a specific residence hall.

  • Co-supervise 9-16 Resident Assistants and indirectly co-supervise 7-15 Desk Assistants, ensuring clear expectations and accountability.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating comprehensive staff training in collaboration with the Office of Residential Experience.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, including one-on-one meetings, and support staff development.
  • Collaborate with the Residential Experience Coordinator (REC) to lead weekly staff meetings and maintain consistent communication.
  • Assist the REC in maintaining efficient residence hall operations, including check-ins/outs, room transfers, key management, and record keeping.
  • Oversee an assigned budget and help manage the mailroom, front desk, or complex office operations.
  • Hold weekly office hours in the assigned UAREC Office Space, assist with resident lockouts during business hours, and serve on 1-2 workgroups per semester.
  • Meet promptly with students to address incidents and resolve lower-level roommate disagreements.
  • Maintain communication with the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity, or other relevant offices, as necessary.
  • Participate in the on-call duty rotation for Housing, ensuring the safety and well-being of all on-campus residents.
  • Assist the Residential Experience Coordinator (REC) in training Resident Assistants (RAs) on the programming model and encouraging the delivery of diverse social and educational programs.
  • Guide staff in assessing student needs, planning community-building activities, and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Assist the REC with administrative tasks related to program planning, approval, and evaluation.
  • Encourage staff to create a learning-focused environment through policy enforcement, program development, and building relationships with residents.
  • Share campus academic resources with staff and students, and help identify at-risk students, facilitating meetings and referrals as needed.
  • Assist the REC with Learning Communities and contribute to the continuous enhancement of related programs and services.
  • In conjunction with REC, work in collaboration with other University departments and faculty to provide out-of-classroom learning opportunities.
  • Seek out opportunities for conversations with students and staff about academic progress and learning.
  • Advise and attend all meetings and activities of the Hall or Apartment Council, providing guidance to help the council achieve its goals.
  • Maintain regular communication with executive board officers and the RHA Advisor(s), including submitting bi-weekly reports as requested.
  • Encourage student and staff participation in Hall/Apartment Council and RHA meetings and activities.
  • Act as a role model and foster positive relationships with students in the complex through regular interaction and support.
  • Keep supervisors informed of relevant issues, concerns, and activities in a timely manner.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of staff, student, and building-related concerns, and respond to emails promptly and professionally during business hours.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Course Load: Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student at FIU and making satisfactory progress towards graduation.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): Possess a minimum FIU cumulative and FIU semester GPA of 2.75 and expected to continue towards positive academic progress.
  • University Standing: Have a good student conduct record, defined as not having been involved in serious violations or incidents (including marijuana, alcohol, and physical violence), not be a repeat offender of policy violations, and not have received housing exclusion status.
  • Living Arrangements: By nature of the position, an Undergraduate Assistant Residential Experience Coordinator is required to live on campus, and therefore, is provided with private accommodations. An UAREC will be expected to reside in their assignedunit while in the position. An UAREC will be expected to maintain presence in the assigned unit overnight during the week and weekends, except duringapproved time off.
  • Contract Dates/Holiday and Vacation Periods: Student housing remains open year-round. The Undergraduate Assistant Residential Experience Coordinator appointment begins in July and ends on the first week of May. The UAREC is expected to be available to work duringthese dates. Housing does remain open during Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break. During these periods, UARECs may be expected to work and provide on call coverage evenings and weekends (as assigned). The level of staff coverage will be determined prior to each vacationperiod.
  • Meet all Florida International University student employment eligibility requirements, including a Level 2 Background Check and Fingerprinting.

  • Exhibit a caring, helpful,and positive attitude; effective time management, confrontation skills, an ability to lead others,
  • Prior knowledge of residential living- learning philosophy is preferred.

Student Disclosure

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a student at FIU with a minimum of six (6) credits as an Undergraduate student or three (3) credits as a Graduate student during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • During the Summer semesters, Students need only remain enrolled and are not required to take credit hours, but cannot have graduated.
  • Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.
Work Schedule

Work schedule can vary depending on the week but will be comprised of 20 hours of work duties.
