Job Summary

Under general supervision, assists provider including all back office duties. Provides nursing support with various functions such as; invasive procedures, medication administration, performing appointment and registration scheduling functions. Assists the RN with clinical clerical functions. Ensures smooth work and patient flow within the clinic.

Essential Functions:

  • Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data. Identifies abnormal patient findings. Communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient's health status to provider or RN. (10%)
  • Assists provider in setting up for procedures including aseptic and sterile techniques; provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments as directed by provider. (10%)
  • Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge. (10%)
  • Assists in the coordination of clerical information necessary to provide patient care. This may include, but is not limited to:
    * Referrals.
    * Assisting patients with appointments if necessary.
    * Faxing of pertinent medical information.
    * Maintains patient medical record and other information. Ensures patient confidentiality
    * Assists patients with the arrangement of tests and treatments prescribed by physician.
    * Assisting the provider or registered nurse in providing routine treatment instructions.

  • Checks in patient by escorting patients from reception area to exam room and communicates information regarding any extended wait or delay in appointment time. (10%)
  • Documents accurately and appropriately in patient medical record. (10%)
  • Reports change in patient condition to appropriate health care provider in a timely manner. (10%)
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies. Prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization and restocking of exam and treatment rooms. (10%)
  • Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures. Helps to identify safety and infection control issues. (10%)
  • Engages in performance appraisal on a routine basis by accepting and providing constructive feedback and integrates feedback into practice. Participates in competency reviews as required by department. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager for the next evaluation period. Participates in the peer review process. (5%)
  • May perform phlebotomy and perform various laboratory procedures after competency verified. Maintains safe collection and processing of laboratory specimens. (5%)

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited program in Medical Office Assisting Required or
  • Accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required

Work Experience:

  • Completion of a 160 hour Externship Required or less than 1 year 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting Required

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical office practice.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.
  • Ability to learn and be proficient in electronic health record documentation.
  • Utilize equipment and technology safely to provide patient care, upon completion of training and competency for applicable clinical area.
