Description:

The Health Education Coordinator (WIC Manager) is responsible for managing the operations of the Woman, Infants, & Children (WIC) Program at Mile Square Health Centers (MSHC). The WIC Manager is responsible for the development of nutrition education curricula and high-risk nutrition counseling. He/she must assure that the WIC program operates in compliance with State and Federal standards, policies, and guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides day to day administration of the program using state program guidelines and regulations, in conjunction with the University, UI Health, and MSHC Policies and Procedures.
  • Direct and monitor the daily operation of the WIC program at MSHC. Plan and develop staff schedules to meet program requirements.
  • Provide guidance and direction to manage WIC clinic staff in meeting established program goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates with various departments on multiple areas of wellness promotion; coordinates information and activities with community resources and serves as a liaison with community agencies as appropriate.
  • Develop planning and implementing general staff development and orientation programs.
  • Provide consultation and educational resource materials (presentations, program speakers, reference materials, etc.) to department heads and program directors.
  • Manage wellness initiative events and information programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate staff and patient attitudes towards relevant programs and handles complaints from management; takes or recommends corrective actions after complaints.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere where staff and participant feel safe and valued by providing excellent customer service.
  • Prepare and manage a program's budget; coordinates the purchase and use of educational materials and equipment.
  • Keep records and prepares reports regarding a facility's health education, staff development and orientation, and information programs; assists with grant writing and other types of reports.
  • Keep information on educational resources that are available to staff including seminars, films, and formal educational opportunities inside and outside of the facility.
  • Assesses client's eligibility, certify, and provide client centered nutrition education to WIC participants Maintain caseload of 90% of State of Illinois assigned level.
  • Assure agency staff is actively and effectively supports and promotes breastfeeding.
  • Ensure participants are screened and referred to other health and/or social services as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

  1. Bachelor's Degree (120 hours) in public, mental, and/or medical health education, social work, psychology, student personnel/affairs, nursing, education or communications
  2. Two (2) years (24 months) of experience conducting professional presentations, seminars or closely related programs and/or providing health education

Note: An applicant with a Master's degree in an area of health education qualifies with one year of professional communications and/or health education experience

Note: Possession of a Certified Health Education Specialist and/or Master Certified Health Education Specialist certification meets the requirements of #1 and #2 above. (http://www.nchec.org/)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition or a related field
  • Registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; or a Master's degree in Food and Nutrition
  • Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • At least two years of experience in clinical food and nutrition or related field
  • At least two years of managerial experience
