Job Description:

Technician Mechanical Tech I

  • High school diploma or recognized equivalent. Vocational certification preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of skilled experience in at least two (2) of the following skilled trades: plastering, masonry, roofing, carpentry, lock and window repair, basic appliance repair, basic plumbing, basic HVACR, basic sheet metal, basic electrical.
  • Ability to troubleshoot building systems components for failures, defects or non-working order.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, building code requirements for educational facilities, life safety codes, and other regulatory codes and standards applicable to the work.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team structure.
  • Ability to serve on-call to provide technical service as necessary.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups, and effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards and hazard control measures applicable to assigned skilled trade areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in mediation and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of current computing technologies and software applications appropriate to the position's responsibilities.
  • Valid State of Florida driver's license.


Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates, schedules, and supervises an assigned work crew; participates in all aspects of projects and work order tasks.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to less experienced/knowledgeable team members in the more complex aspects of the work.
  • Performs estimates for labor and materials required for assigned projects/work order requests.
  • Responds to routine building systems maintenance/repair needs/requests in one(1) or more of the following skilled trades: paltering, masonry, roofing, carpentry, lock and window repair, basic appliance repair, basic plumbing, basic HVACR, basic sheet metal, basic electrical.
  • Performs routine inspections, testing and troubleshoot tasks to identify failures, defects or improper functioning; determines underlying cause(s) and takes corrective measures to prevent future breakdowns/failures.
  • Performs routine installation, maintenance, and repair tasks in/on buildings, associated components external attachments, ancillary utilities, and interior furnishings.
  • Reads and interprets manufacturers specifications, blueprints, schematics, diagrams, technical drawings and other related documentation applicable to the assigned trade(s) area(s).
  • Adheres to preventive and scheduled maintenance protocols to ensure optimal functioning and operational/resource efficiencies, thereby minimizing downtime and excessive cost.
  • Participates in periodic training initiatives in adherence to departmental standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) law and regulations and other industry and regulatory standards governing workplace safety practices and procedures (e.g. lockout tagout, arc flash).
  • Ensures hand tools, equipment, project materials, and assigned vehicles are properly inventoried, maintained and serviced.
  • Maintain appropriate logs, records and documentation regarding assigned tasks/projects; prepares materials for work orders utilizing department technology and software applications.
  • Participates in cross-training initiatives to develop and expand skills and abilities in related trades and to support departmental operational and resource efficiencies.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry trends and technology developments for application to trade areas of assignment.


Additional Job Functions:

  • Follows adopted policies and procedures in accordance with School Board priorities.
  • Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of the public education and in support of the District's Mission Statement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs., occasionally up to 75 lbs., as part of a team in excess of 100 lbs. considerable physical activity required.
