For this position, we seek an exceptional emerging interdisciplinary scholar with broad and innovative theoretical and teaching interests in any socio-legal aspects of the contemporary Middle East/North Africa and/or Middle East/North African Diasporas. The area of specialization, methodology, and discipline are open. In addition to having a robust research profile, the successful candidate will demonstrate their ability to contribute to the interdisciplinary minor in Global Middle East Studies (GMES) and to one or more of CLJ's research clusters listed at https://clj.uic.edu/about/ Research could also expand growing areas of focus within CLJ, such as repression, human rights, international law, militarism, securitization, and state violence. Interest in or commitment to community engagement, broadly defined, is encouraged.

The CLJ Department is a thriving academic community of interdisciplinary scholars, teachers and students who are dedicated to all forms of academic inquiry under the broad umbrella of criminology, law and society, and the study of justice. Global Middle East Studies (GMES) is a new interdisciplinary minor at UIC, focusing on the diverse and transnational experiences of Middle Eastern and North African communities within the region and around the world. Combining critical ethnic studies and area studies approaches, the GMES minor provides students with background and analytical tools for the transnational study of the Middle East, North Africa, and diasporic communities from the region. Qualifications:

The Department of Criminology, Law, and Justice (CLJ) at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in conjunction with the Middle East and Muslim Societies Cluster (MEMS Cluster) Initiative, is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. Assistant professors are expected to teach four courses a year (two each semester) and support students as mentors and internship supervisors. In addition, assistant professors will provide service to the Department and actively engage in research in their area(s) of specialization. A Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required.
