Position description

The Kriegstein Lab, located at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus, is seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in conducting basic science research with a focus on studying the molecular mechanisms of brain development. The candidate needs to have experience with brain organoid technology, developmental neurobiology, and single cell transcriptomics and spatial transcriptomics, and preferably competent using the Vizgen MERFISH platform. The candidate will work on a study of the developing human ganglionic eminences using both primary tissue samples and organoids. The candidate will develop techniques to acquire timelapse imaging of cell mitotic and migratory behaviors well as perform single cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic imaging of developing prenatal ganglionic eminences and postnatal cortical interneurons, with particular attention to the medial ganglionic eminence and cell behavior within the Dens structures. The candidate will also be expected to analyze data, prepare figures, and draft manuscripts based on the results and will be expected to take the appropriate online courses including on ethical conduct, animal welfare, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens, etc. Appointees to the Associate rank should possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Appointees to the full Specialist rank should possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization.

You will become a member of the vibrant research community at the UCSF Parnassus campus and your chief responsibilities will include molecular biology and tissue and cell culture, managing stocks and supplies in the lab, and independent literature research, including presentations at the regular lab meetings. This position is for one year and ideally suited for an individual with a molecular biology experience who is looking to gain further research experience on the way to further career development. Good communication skills are essential. Reappointment will be considered but is not guaranteed.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.
