Primary Purpose of Department
The primary purpose of academic advising at the university is to provide students with the support needed to successfully navigate their academic experience from first enrollment to graduation.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, teaching students how to effectively manage their academic success, and supporting students through exploration of their major and career development plans. Students are expected to develop plans consistent with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources to achieve their long-term goals. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate and relevant information so that they can take the initiative and responsibility for their success. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte in a professional and respectful manner that reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
Individual Assistance: The Academic Advisor will assume advising responsibilities for any assigned student in the Klein College of Science at UNC Charlotte. This individual will also be responsible for supporting students declaring or expressing interest in the majors offered by the Klein College of Science. The advisor must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office while also building strong alliances with faculty and other campus partners that support the holistic development of students. The advisor must have a commitment to student success and the ability to listen and analyze academic needs.
Additional Assistance: The Academic Advisor will also be engaged in other activities that support the orientation, onboarding, and consistent communication to UNC Charlotte students. These activities might include teaching and seminar facilitation, event participation, coordinated messaging, and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Masters degree
  • Demonstration of ability to establish rapport with individuals, inspire confidence and build relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality.
  • Experience presenting to groups of people utilizing relevant technology and pedagogical best practices.
  • Experience using advising technologies or related technologies that support student success.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Masters degree
  • 1-2 years of direct experience advising, coaching, or counseling college students.
  • Experience teaching a first-year seminar/first-year experience course or some type of student success seminar course.
  • Demonstrated use of advising technologies or related technologies that support student success such as Banner, Internet Native Banner, Degree Works, Navigate/EAB platform, etc.
  • Experience using the Google suite of applications.
