The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenured position, rank Associate Professor or Professor, beginning Fall 2025. Rank will be determined at time of appointment and assistant professors with credentials appropriate for appointment at the associate rank will also be considered. This will be a joint position with the School of Data Science. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or extramural funding appropriate to rank at appointment is required. Workload for research intensive faculty is two courses per semester, at all levels (including graduate seminars), plus typical service duties. Salary competitive.

Our department embodies an inter-traditional approach to philosophy; we engage in work within and between philosophical traditions, aiming to build a philosophical culture where sub-disciplinary boundaries are less important than the resources traditions provide for addressing concrete practices and problems. The philosophy department offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy. It has connections to other units across the university, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and is closely affiliated with UNC Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics ( https://ethics.charlotte.edu/). The School of Data Science ( SDS) ( https://sds.charlotte.edu/) is an interdisciplinary unit housed in the College of Computing and Informatics ( CCI). Established in January 2020, it was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas. Currently, the SDS offers a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, an undergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, and two Master of Science programs (Data Science & Business Analytics and Health Informatics & Analytics). The SDS is planning to launch a data science PhD program in Fall 2025, pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges ( SACSCOC). The SDS teaches and researches methods to apply statistics and computer science techniques to develop data-driven solutions to real-world problems, including the ethical application and use of data in communication studies, business, healthcare, social sciences, transportation, engineering, and more. The School has grown quickly to more than 800 students, half of them graduate students, and it is continuing to evolve with the needs of the students, university, and community. Currently, the school has approximately 80 full time, joint, and affiliate faculty.

As the largest and most academically diverse college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences houses 15 departments, 18 interdisciplinary programs, and 6 applied centers. We offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs with extensive honors and early-entry options. The College plays a pivotal role in delivering on the university's goals in the areas of research excellence, student success and experience, and community engagement. Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Area of Research Specialization: Ethics and Data Science, broadly construed, with research and teaching interests in areas such as (but not limited to) privacy, model transparency, explainability, public trust, algorithmic fairness, data and social justice (including approaches traditionally underrepresented in the field such as feminist, queer/trans, non-Western, etc.), data and migration, environmental issues, or related questions for artificial intelligence.

Area of Teaching Competence: Open, but candidates should be able to teach the required ethics class for graduate students in Data Science and to co-teach in the undergraduate "Data and Society" studio course. The successful candidate will have a tenure home in the Department of Philosophy, with a workload split of 51% in Philosophy and 49% in the University's interdisciplinary School of Data Science.
Minimum Experience/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
In addition to the required Area of Research Specialization above, candidates must: (1) have a doctoral degree in philosophy or a related discipline (such as Science & Technology Studies) at the time of appointment; (2) provide evidence of scholarly activity appropriate for a tenured position in a philosophy department; and (3) provide evidence of successful teaching. Rank will be determined at time of appointment and assistant professors with credentials appropriate for appointment at the associate rank will also be considered.
