Job Summary

Reporting to the School of Dentistry Dean's Office Finance Director, the Finance Manager will use his/her skills as an advanced professional with a full understanding of the organizations practices, policies and procedures to manage a wide range of issues. The Finance Manager will be primarily responsible for developing, interpreting and implementing financial concepts for financial planning, resource planning, and control of the Dean's Office organizational budget. The Manager will supervise the finance unit staff, guide their work and determine their deadlines and deliverables. The Manager will analyze and prepare recommendations for the School's department core allocations as well as the Dean's Office unit's financial plans, including annual resource allocations and on-going monitoring and updates of each unit's operating forecast. Additional responsibilities include being the primary contact for the finance team's stakeholders, monitoring all Dean's Office and Dental Center financial transactions, conceiving and maintaining financial reports using data management tools, and identifying and resolving financial and internal control issues related to financial functions or practices. Additionally, the Finance Manager will be involved in a variety of ad-hoc clinical, School-wide, and campus-wide projects, including the development and implementation of streamlined business processes, analyses of complex financial services, and ensuring best practices, policy compliance, and proper fund management. School-wide activities will include working with the School's IT Team design and automate standardized reports, as well as investigating and identifying business analytics opportunities.

The Finance Manager will work on problems of diverse scope where expertise in the field and analysis of data requires evaluation of multiple factors. Such duties include preparing the School's department core allocations, CODA accreditation report, annual budgeting forecast and planning, preparing the School's self-supporting program's Cost of Education report, and designing recharge methodologies for School's central services. Additionally, the Finance Manager will be the primary support to the Finance Director for all activities related to managing the School of Dentistry's budget model. Responsibilities will include managing and leading the design, updating and disbursement of regular reporting related to the faculty compensation model, clinical revenue funds flow, state funding allocation, and academic support. The Financial Manager will also support financial reporting and budgeting requirements for the Dental Center.

The Finance Manager must be able to work effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, UCSF central offices, and outside vendors to ensure compliance with UC Financial procedures and reporting. The Manager will serve on a variety of finance and reporting-related campus committees as the representative for the School as well as lead ad hoc focus or advisory groups for the School. The Finance Manager will serve as back-up when the Finance Director is away, which includes directly supporting the Associate Dean of Administration and collaborating with and assisting the School's five Departments. The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written skills as well as demonstrate thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Bearbuy, Peoplesoft, MyReports, MyExpense, and UC policies.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $136,000 - $204,000 (Annual Rate).

UCSF DENTAL CENTER UCSF Dental Center is a cohesive entity within the structure of UCSF's School of Dentistry that oversees and operates all clinical activities in the dental school. Its primary goal is to provide outstanding, seamless, cutting-edge patient-centered care. The Dental Center also aims to provide state of the art clinical experiences and education to students; deliver cost-effective dental health care; and generate resources for reinvestment in the School of Dentistry's educational, clinical and scholarship missions. UCSF Dental Center's primary services include all advanced dental specialty programs, and the general dentistry and specialty faculty practices. A majority of the Dental Center's clinical facilities are located at the Parnassus Campus, with affiliated clinics at Buchanan Dental Center and an additional presence at Mission Bay and the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG).

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum 6+ years of related experience and 5+ years of managerial experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of finance and budget policies, practices and systems; budgeting and reporting techniques; fund accounting; human resource planning; accounting and bookkeeping.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • Client services oriented; good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to deal with changing priorities and direct the work of others accordingly. Ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Advance ability using multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to synthesize and integrate information for highly complex, strategic financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports. Expertise with MS Office and advanced Excel skills.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated high degree of computer literacy.
  • Strong interpersonal and consultative skills requiring organizational savvy; expert service orientation and critical thinking skills; attention to detail. Expert ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high-volume environment. Client services oriented; has good listening, communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen applications, interview candidates, and either make selection decisions or recommend individuals for hire.
  • Ability to identify, collect, analyze, and report on complex data.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 3-5 years of UCSF experience, including familiarity with Bearbuy, Peoplesoft, MyReports, MyExpense and UC policies.
  • Experience working in an academic environment and/or medical center
  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Professional certification preferred.
