GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy, external beam radiation therapy treatments, protons, and any other additional techniques for the treatment of patients in Radiation Oncology department. The medical dosimetrist is responsible for designing a treatment plan and carrying out calculations with mathematical accuracy for the delivery of radiation treatment based on the radiation oncologist's prescribed course of radiation therapy. This treatment plan takes into consideration tumor pathology, tumor volume and inherent dose-limiting structures surrounding the tumor. Once a treatment plan is complete the medical dosimetrist will work closely with the radiation therapists in the implementation of the prescribed plan. A medical dosimetrist has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distribution and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist. Provides support and assists in simulations, quality assurance initiatives, billing, departmental meetings, and the teaching of dosimetry students in the dosimetry program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform external beam treatment planning according to the physician's prescription. Consider dose-limiting structures (i.e.- Boarding Pass, Scorecards, etc.) in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription. Develops appropriate treatment plans based on the technology available and the specifications of the physician orders. Successfully completes QA plans for IMRT.
  • Monitor the treatment process to assure the physicians prescription is followed. Develops boost or modified plans as needed.
  • Work with an array of computer software to create optimal treatment plans. Assumes proficiency in image registration with various image data sets to include CT, MRI, and PET.
  • Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery to include DRR's, CBCT's, and other IGRT methods as specified.
  • Comply with billing polices, regulations, and auditing.
  • Perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the Radiation Oncologist's prescribed dose for external beam radiotherapy treatments, brachytherapy, protons, and document all pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
  • Assist in in-vivo patient dosimetry and any other measurements as directed by the Medical Physicist and physician.
  • Participate in continuing education in the area of current treatment planning techniques and advances in medical dosimetry.
  • Participate in department meetings (ie- chart rounds, clin ops, billing, QA) and any other technical professional issues pertaining to department operations.
  • Participate in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the department
  • Performs and assists in simulations and tumor localizations
  • Teach applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students, residents, and radiation therapists.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:

* At minimum, requires a level of knowledge normally acquired through the completion of an associate's or bachelor's degree in physical or biological sciences or radiation therapy technology.

* Master's Degree in medical dosimetry from a JRCERT accredited program preferred.

B. Work Experience:

* Minimum 1-year clinical experience as a dosimetry student in a Medical Dosimetry JRCERT accredited program preferred.

* Experience as a Radiation Therapists desirable.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

* Required to be eligible to take the Medical Dosimetry Certification (CMD eligible) exam and must obtain certification within three years of hire or within three attempts of the examination.

* Certified Medical Dosimetrist preferred.

* Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist desirable.

* Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy desirable

* Good communications skills, strong team work and collaboration.
