Assistant Director of Communication Support Programs - Student Academic Success Center, Office of the Provost

The Student Academic Success Center is a collaborative, equity-focused, data-informed, and student-centered resource for undergraduate and graduate students that offers a full range of academic resources and programs in one integrated Center. The Student Academic Success Center team focuses on creating spaces for students to engage in their coursework and approach to learning. Through academic coaching, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, effective communication strategies, the Tartan Scholars program, accommodations for students with disabilities, language support for multilingual speakers and offers individualized guidance on academic progress to students. We offer a wide variety of opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to deepen their understanding of who they are as a learner, communicator and, ultimately, scholar. We also engage with faculty and with staff to improve the coordination and professional development for academic advisors. The Assistant Director of Communication Support Programs position is aligned with the delivery of cohesive academic support programs, specifically communication support. The Assistant Director of Communication Support Programs will report to the Director of Communication and Language Support.

The Assistant Director of Communication Support Programs will be a creative team member with a passion for equity-minded, coordinated student support through data-informed decision making and previous peer or professional writing/communication center experience. The Assistant Director of Communication Support Programs will primarily supervise the day-to-day operations of communication support programs, especially with regard to consultant staff supervision; practicum training course assistance; observation of consultations; management of ongoing consultant training, professional development, and downtime projects; management of communication support appointments; and support for workshops, conversation groups, and other programming. The Assistant Director will also develop and deliver communication-related programming and contribute to the overall support of the Director of Communication and Language Support in the management and delivery of Communication and Language Support initiatives.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Program Delivery - Oversee day-to-day operations and manage 20-30 peer (undergraduate and graduate student) consultants, including but not limited to: check-in meetings with area supervisors and consultants; consultant shift supervision; management of area supervisor shifts and projects; assistance with practicum training course, training modules, and professional development opportunities; supervision of consultant observations; coordination of regular student staff team meetings; and management of scheduling processes.
  • Program Planning and Development - Partner with the Director of Communication and Language Support and Assistant Director of Language Support Initiatives to develop and maintain connections to cross-campus programs, departments, and offices related to communication, including data gathering and analysis to engage in ongoing assessment of existing services and propose revisions or new services that meet students' needs.
  • Administrative Duties - Provide administrative support to student team, including time card process and approval in Workday; management of consultation schedule and appointments in scheduling platform; collaboration with Success Operations Team to manage logistics for programs and services under Communication and Language Support.
  • Workshops - Develop and/or deliver communication-related workshops and information sessions offered as part of the Student Academic Success Center semester skill-aligned success series or requested by campus stakeholders.
  • Success Center Responsibilities - Curate Communication Support content for Academic Success Center newsletter, social media presence, and website content; participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in English, writing studies, rhetoric, composition, languages, communication, technical communication, humanities, or related field
  • Experience: 3-5 years of relevant work experience with students, peer staffing models or student services
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's degree in English, writing studies, rhetoric, composition, languages, communication, technical communication, humanities, or related field
  • Experience: 1+ years of progressive responsibilities in an academic support environment; 1+ years of supervisory experience in a writing/communication center; experience managing Writing Center Online platform
