Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, Campus Community and Retention Services, the Executive Director, Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers provides strategic leadership and management to the department's instructional support services to enhance the student experience and promote student success. Provide oversight of programmatic, teaching/instructional development, long-term planning, program evaluation, budget and fiscal control, revenue generation, technical support services, utilization of physical resources, supervision of professional and administrative staff and other management functions. Works in collaboration with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs units and forges strategic partnerships with stakeholders to garner program support and effectively deliver services. The Executive Director is a member of the Student Affairs Leadership team and plays a critical role in the divisional initiatives and committees focusing on student success, retention and graduation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, social science, humanities, engineering, education, management or related field, and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Progressively responsible experience developing and directing university academic/instructional retention programs. Experience with best practices, assessment and research in evaluating programs and services that support student success and development.
  • Experience teaching at the university level. Knowledge of higher education pedagogy that supports teacher and tutor training.
  • Experience in the management of human resources including supervision, performance evaluation and professional development. Strong management skills in higher education and ability to work and lead teams.
  • Experience in fiscal management, grant management, and budget planning. Experience in the analysis of complex information or problems and deriving at logical conclusions for selecting the proper course of action.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse populations, identities and language backgrounds, with special attention to the success of low-income, first generation, marginalized and underserved students.
  • Oral and written skills to communicate in a diverse environment at all levels, with tact and diplomacy in order to achieve program and campus goals. Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Political acumen and skills to serve in a public relations capacity within the campus community and general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in science, social science, humanities, engineering, education, management or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five or more years of full-time progressively responsible experience managing academic support services for college students.
  • Skills to articulate program purposes and goals to the general public and work with staff to generate interest, funding, and support for services and specialists programs.
  • Knowledge of statistical and survey methods for developing and using qualitative and quantitative data that drive services and programs.
  • Knowledge of computer systems that support technology needs in the classroom and office environment.

Department Overview

The Academic Assistance and Tutoring Centers (AATC) is a large centralized academic support unit in Student Affairs. We provide an inclusive and interactive learning environment where students participate in reinforcing and retaining knowledge in multi-disciplinary writing, math, and science subjects through co-curricular academic services including classes, workshops, office hours, content reviews, drop-in tutoring, a writing studio, and writing appointments. AATC consists of 24 professional staff and 300 undergraduate BX tutors and readers and student assistants. The Math Diagnostic Testing Project is a program in AATC that supports math testing in K-12 California schools. AATC's administrative support team provides payroll and human resources assistance as well as program information for students and staff. htttps://tutoring.ucdavis.edu
