Summary

A Mary Free Bed Armed Security Officer, working individually and as part of a team, guards, patrols (on foot or in a vehicle), monitors premises, facilities and other areas to prevent theft, violence, and infractions of rules. Secures facility and protects facility in case of fires, natural disasters, or other hazardous events.

While working at the Control Desk, the security officer will relay all incoming, outgoing and inter-departmental telephone calls appropriately and as quickly as possible. Receives vendors, guests and staff, ascertains their needs, and directs them accordingly. Can handle all emergency situations with confidence and controlled emotions.

Essential Job Responsibilities



  • This armed uniformed position is a member of the MFB Threat Response Team that would respond to emergency situations, critical incidents such as active assailant events, and deadly force situations.
  • Make eye contact and pleasantly greet each patient, visitor, and staff members; maintains a pleasant, friendly and professional demeanor with all guest, client, staff members and coworkers to create favorable impressions.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment; provides protective service and response for protection of the people and property of the Hospital; is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of the Department by protecting patients, visitors and employees who are in danger or have been threatened and intervene when appropriate to reduce or defuse potentially violent situations.
  • Patrols hospital buildings and grounds to detect or deter criminal activity and unsafe conditions. Responds to emergency situations, calls for service and other requests for assistance. Provides supports for safe and efficient parking and transportation services.
  • Protect patients, visitors and employees who are in danger or have been threatened and intervene when appropriate to reduce or defuse potentially violent situations
  • Standby as requested in certain situations to prevent disturbed or menacing patients, visitors or anyone else from being a danger to themselves or others.
  • Monitors and maintains closed circuit TV/video surveillance and two-way radio systems and other life safety systems.
  • Coordinate safety and security procedures during emergencies by responding to burglary, fire and other alarms and take appropriate action. Create safety awareness among guests and staff and conduct preliminary investigations into thefts, shortages and other complaints involving potential criminal misconduct.
  • Patrols premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Relays incoming, outgoing, and inter-departmental calls, takes and relays messages, and responds to telephone queries with a smile and in a warm efficient way to facilitate public and hospital business.
  • Responds quickly and accurately to emergency and non-emergency alarms including fires, codes, and tornados (or other disasters); receives initial reports, alerts outside agencies for their response, pages instructions to all hospital staff, and stands-by to provide further communications so that appropriate emergency responses may begin. Clear and reset alarm systems when applicable.
  • Makes appropriate overhead pages on a timely basis and with clear enunciation to communicate messages to people outside of telephone access.
  • Transports patients, visitors or other guests to different areas of the MFB campus by wheelchair or escorting them as needed.
  • Protects all hospital guest and staff's confidentiality according to HIPPA requirements.
  • Maintains a clean, neat work environment including a professional appearance, the security vehicle and all surrounding areas within the security office as described by Mary Free Bed's Dress Code Policy.
  • Adheres to hospital policies
  • Maintains a detailed knowledge of the facility, including services, departments, clinics, peripheral services, conference rooms and other pertinent information
  • Completes incident reports that are detailed and strictly factual
  • Ability to function in an environment with possible exposure to blood borne pathogens or other potentially infectious/hazardous materials, and possible exposure to high or low temperatures as both inside and outside conditions indicate.

Customer Service Responsibilities

Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.

Essential Job Qualifications



  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age to operate a firearm, required by law.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must, within six months of hire, become a Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) through the IAHSS.
  • Must successfully complete a Bluestone Psych evaluation prior to becoming an Armed Security Officer.
  • Must, within 90-day training period, become certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heath Association and First Aid.
  • Have a current/valid State of Michigan Concealed Pistol License or eligible to obtain one within 90 days of employment; which will allow for the officer to carry a conducted electrical weapon (i.e. Taser) as well as operate a motor vehicle while armed.
  • Customer service experience (Health Care industry preferred).
  • Ability to work flexible schedules and extended hours as needed.
  • Must have a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
  • Must have and maintain a driving record with no Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) or Operating While Visibly Impaired (OWVI) infractions and 4 points or less (to meet company fleet insurance requirements).
  • Must demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Must have ability to manage multiple priorities and multi-task.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, etc.) for an entire shift. Note: Shifts will not be canceled due to inclement weather and all employees will be required to attend their scheduled shifts and maintain a high quality of work despite weather conditions
  • Ability to speak, read and write standard English language; to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos; to write simple correspondence.
  • Must be able to apply reasoning and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to understand 24 hour and military time systems
  • Ability to enter and exit vehicles of all types several times per day
  • Ability to drive for outings and other hospital activities with staff or patients for both short and long-distance trips of up to three (3) hours each way while remaining alert and maintaining a high level of professionalism, situational awareness and decision-making abilities.
  • Must be able to complete Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) as well as Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) training and demonstrate proficiency regularly as required. NOTE: Voluntary OC exposure is required.
