Job Summary

This position reports directly to the Senior Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. Under limited supervision, the Superintendent of the Carpenter and Lock Shop have primary responsibility for the supervision and management of the critical and non-critical carpentry or lock attributes for UCDH. Incumbent provides direct supervision of skilled craft carpenters who have functional responsibilities to inspect, service, repair and maintain physical components of all facilities and grounds. In addition, incumbent will coordinate and manage scheduling and communications to support Environment of Care projects. This is an institutional goal to improve patient satisfaction through physical environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid California Driver's License in good standing
  • Minimum 3-year experience managing Carpentry trade.
  • Minimum 3-year experience in a supervisory role at a Health Care Facility
  • Possess a certificate of completion from a recognized union apprenticeship program, University apprenticeship program, accredited trade school or have the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to a journey level craftsperson in Carpentry trade.
  • Must have ability to read and interpret blueprints and working specifications.
  • Knowledge and skills within a supervisory position, and ability to lead and oversee employees in the department.
  • Solid knowledge in the Carpentry trade and related practices, tools and equipment.
  • Use PC or computer system to access and manipulate data and control equipment and processes.
  • Must be able to see and read well enough to understand written work instructions, directions, technical manuals, blueprints, computer screens, printout, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and skills with administrative ability to keep accurate records.
  • Make accurate estimates and be current on hospital codes and procedures.
  • Learn and observe the safety policies and guidelines set up by the department.
  • Knowledge and skills in the paint trade to assign jobs according to employees' abilities and hospital standards.
  • Knowledge of commonly accepted industry operation/maintenance/repair practices and University policies and procedures
  • Manage programs and maintain files, records, and logs.
  • Must have oral and written communication skills adequate to convey instructions, directions, and information to co-workers, managers, customers, and contractors.
  • Adjust priorities to accomplish objectives in a changing work environment.
  • Knowledge of the Joint Commission regulations and OSHPD

Department Overview

The Plant Operations & Maintenance (PO&M) Department is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of buildings, systems, and grounds at UC Davis Health that includes 148 acres and structures that total 4 million GMSF. Plant Operations & Maintenance is one of the largest operations and maintenance support providers to Hospital, Clinical, Administrative, Research, SOM and SON departments throughout UCDH. UC Davis Health is one of several UC campuses that have their own cogeneration, central power plants. Cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat, both of which are used throughout the Medical Center Campus and is supported by Plant Operations & Maintenance 24x7x365.

Work Environment

This position participates in a bid process for shifts of grave, swing and weekend days based upon seniority in the shop. Must be able to work overtime and on any shift that is assigned. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice Program.
