Clinical Mentor Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Inova L. J. Murphy's Children's Hospital is home to the largest, most comprehensive subspecialty neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the region. Our 108-bed, Level IV NICU cares for high-risk infants requiring specialized care and observation. The NICU is also the first in the nation to receive The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Prematurity. This certification represents the highest level of care for premature birth patients.

As a Clinical Mentor, you will develop expertise in training, coaching and mentoring staff through the promotion and delivery of high-quality nursing care. To help achieve our mission, you will orient, educate and develop nursing staff to ensure competence and ability to fulfill specified responsibilities. Providing support to novice and advanced nurses and preceptors to ensure a smooth transition into practice and the work environment is required. Your ability to integrate knowledge, skills and experiences to meet the clinical and social adjustment needs of all team members is of vital importance. Participating in the design, delivery and evaluation of educational programs to promote clinical development and career progression from novice to proficient nurse for new or existing clinicians is expected.

Schedule: Full-time (40 hrs/wk)

Requirements: Requires a minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in clinical nursing in designated specialty. Experience serving as preceptor.

Minimum Education Requirement: BSN (Bachelors Degree of Nursing) from an accredited school of nursing.

Minimum Licensure: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Virginia or hold a privilege to practice in the State of Virginia under the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

Certification Requirement: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association required upon start.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with teaching, mentoring, and coaching nursing staff, especially new graduate and novice nurses within the clinical acute setting.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to display a caring demeanor toward others.
  • Proficient computer skills required.
