Works in the cage wash area. Operates tunnel washers, rack washers, autoclaves and other industrial sanitation and animal care support equipment. Conducts cleaning activities by dumping soiled bedding, removing waste and excessive amounts of dirt and debris and providing disinfection to reduce or eliminate unacceptable concentrations of microorganisms. Prepares, pre-cleans and organizes equipment prior to processing in industrial machines. Keeps clean and dirty equipment and supplies separated. Provides regular preventive maintenance and upkeep of the equipment. Maintains records and quality control information. Operates and maintains water bottle filling devices and automatic watering equipment. Maintains the cage wash area in a clean and orderly condition at the end of each shift. Uses brooms, mops, scrapers brushes, scrubbing machines, hand trucks, power sprayers and other accessory equipment.
Performs sanitation and cleaning throughout the animal facility as required to maintain accreditation standards. This includes major sanitation of animal rooms, support and service areas, storage rooms and corridors. Assists in maintaining the animal morgue and freezers and disposing of dead animals.
Transports animals, supplies and equipment as directed. Receives and handles feed and bedding. Carries out other service and support activities in the facility at the direction of a supervisor. These may include monitoring and recording environmental conditions, evaluating light timer settings, performing surveys of the physical condition of the facility, conducting quality assurance tests and other tasks that contribute to the level of sanitation and operation. Conducts minor repairs, maintenance and upkeep of animal care equipment such as replacement of casters
Provides animal care consistent with standard operational procedures. This requires handling research animals, the ability to transfer them to and from primary enclosures and to provide food and water. Requires the ability to read technical instructions and standard operating procedures and to write in records. Must develop knowledge and technical skills to provide humane care for a wide variety of animals consistent with standards of modern laboratory animal science and research. Must participate in training to stay current and facilitate effective implementation of the animal care and use program for the care and use of laboratory animals.
Perform other related duties as assigned or required
Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the core values of the University.

High School Diploma or equivalent

AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) Preferred
