PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Senior. Engineering Specialist in Batch, Binder and Furnace is accountable to establish and maintain processes and procedures to safely operate the batch house and furnaces to meet codes, specifications, and to continuously improve the glass making process by eliminating waste, improving safety, reducing cost, increasing capacity and productivity, and improving the product per customer requirements.

Reports to: The Sr. Engineering Specialist / Batch and Furnace Engineer reports to the Technical Leader.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES




  1. Live the Safety stand, adhere to the safety responsibilities.



The Sr. Engineering Specialist / Batch, Binder and Furnace Engineer will have responsibility for:



  • Ensuring a safe, clean and environmentally compliant work environment and building a culture where safety is a first priority
  • Ensuring that all control plans, work instructions, standard work, and other procedures related to the technical operation of the batch house, binder room and furnaces ensure the safety of employees
  • Developing risk assessments for critical tasks including emergency response



Metrics



  • Implement a personal safety action plan and review with leader
  • Safety metrics - RIR, first aids, near misses, SAFE and Critical 6




  1. Knowing our Customers



The Sr. Engineering Specialist / Batch, Binder and Furnace Engineer will have responsibility for:



  • Identifying, understanding, and teaching others the Critical Process Characteristics required to provide our customers with a quality product, beginning with the base glass.
  • Developing and implementing procedures and systems to ensure glass/products consistently meet or exceed customer expectations, including supporting experiments or trials for new and existing products

  1. Process Performance



The Sr. Engineering Specialist / Batch, Binder and Furnace Engineer will have responsibility for:



  • Conducting process audits to review Critical Process Variables and implementing sustainable corrective actions for process shifts or upsets
  • Determining process and product consistency and capability (Cpk)
  • Implementing control charting schemes for Critical Process Variables based on ISBMS and S&T specifications
  • Developing and implementing Operator Control Plans and Standard Work to ensure that all processes and products meet specifications at the lowest cost.
  • Identifying and eliminating common causes of process variation (troubleshooting)
  • Analyzing process data, providing feedback and making recommendations to optimize performance
  • Identifying and implementing process and best practices. Improvements may originate from S&T, ISBMS, or other facilities
  • Leading investigation of and implementing corrective actions for issues surfaced through process related issues.
  • Coaching, counseling, and training all employees on process control and lean tools.
  • Establishing processes for all critical tasks and audit for adherence and compliance
  • Partner with maintenance and peer Manufacturing Engineers to resolve equipment issues and improve equipment reliability.
  • Identifying and requesting capital funding for equipment, modifications, etc.

  1. Leading and Developing Talent



The Sr. Engineering Specialist / Batch, Binder and Furnace Engineer will have responsibility for:



  • Educating primary employees in the glass melting process, process control procedures, and emergency response procedures.
  • Coaching, counseling, and training of new engineers as part of their development plans.
  • Partnering with employees to develop and implement Operator Control Plans and Standard Work.
  • Partnering with Maintenance to develop and implement Operator Based Care plans for equipment to ensure employee understanding and ownership.

Job Requirements

Experience:



  1. Minimum of 3 years experience within a manufacturing or technical environment or leadership development program
  2. Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Master's degree preferred



Knowledge and Abilities:



  1. Understands customer needs, environmental requirements, product specifications, basic cost drivers, Critical Product Characteristics, and the Critical Process Variables (CPVs) that impact these elements
  2. Understands and works with basic principles of engineering
  3. Understands statistical concepts including trial design, data analysis, control charts, process capability and design of experiments to drive continuous improvements
  4. Understands basic elements of producing fiberglass including raw materials, glass melting, processes and control systems
  5. Ability to communicate with and engage employees at all levels of the organization
  6. Ability to manage multiple priorities or projects at one time
  7. Six Sigma Black or Green Belt with Lean Certification or evidence of Lean Manufacturing experience
  8. Ability to travel 5-10%
