JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Mechanical Fabrication and Assembly Department in the Undersea Systems Office (USO) at The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is looking for a quality conscious Mechanical Engineering Support Specialist to work multiple projects and perform a wide range of tasks. The mission of the Mechanical Fabrication and Assembly Department is to develop and maintain expertise in the research, development, assembly, integration, and delivery of specialty electro-mechanical systems for undersea applications.

You will apply practical engineering assignments that include facility and experimental support hardware lay-out and design, fabrication, assembly and test; facility maintenance and repair of capital and test equipment in support of various sponsored/University projects; meet with faculty and staff engineers to define the scope of task requirements and schedule constraints, and communicate with engineers and project managers to provide progress reports and facilitate the identification of resources needed to accomplish the task/project.

You will:

  • Perform assembly operations and fabrication of program, facility, and test equipment

  • Perform design and layout of standard facility and test equipment

  • Inspect, test, and calibrate parts and equipment

  • Use machine shop tools and equipment to support program progress

  • Assess and identify system faults, and adjust/repair

  • May develop and provide documentation for task procedures and process

Additional responsibilities for higher positions includes:

  • Evaluate the selection of materials and components based on operational and performance specifications

  • Assist senior technical/engineering staff in gathering, compiling, and archiving test data in the laboratory or in the field

  • May work as part of a test project support team, including selected task leadership roles in the laboratory or in the field

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon your education and experience. Minimum requirements include an Associate's Degree and 2+ years of related experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for a higher level position.

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Highly knowledgeable in complex electro-mechanical component, sub-system, and system assembly, disassembly, inspection, testing, design, and troubleshooting

  • Possess the ability to interpret engineering drawings and adherence to detailed mechanical assembly procedures

  • Background or familiarity with pneumatics, electrical systems, and hydraulics

  • Highly knowledgeable in the use of various machine shop tools, such as Bridgeport Milling machine and horizontal lathe

  • Success in an environment where various forms of writing skills were crucial to be effective

  • Average knowledge of Microsoft Office, with the ability and willingness to perform computer tasking or learn computer programs

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level, and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.

Preferred skills/experience areas include

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology

  • Graduation from a technical trade college/vocational technical school

  • Military experience

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $81,500.00
