Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History ( AMNH) is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The AMNH seeks a seasoned financial professional knowledgeable in complex not-for-profit financial environments and equipped with innovative organizational planning strategies to serve as Vice President of Finance and Controller.

The successful candidate understands how to align financial imperatives with institutional mission and priorities, has strong people leadership skills, and is proficient in complex budgeting strategies and planning, tax-exempt revenue streams, and funding mechanisms. This position will serve in an advisory role, offering suggestions and guidance to other senior leaders in a way that's accessible and actionable by non-financial colleagues. The ideal leader is highly collaborative and excels in building and maintaining relationships across an organization and, with the Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, able to articulate a strategic plan for the Finance Department, which aligns with and supports the implementation of the Museum's strategic plan.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President for Finance is responsible for, oversees, directs, and leads in the following functional areas of the Museum: Accounting and business operation, Financial reports and audit, Treasury functions, Payroll, Endowment and Investment Accounting, Procurement and contracting, Cash Control, Accounts Payable, Post Award Grant Financial Administration, State and Federal reporting, including overseeing the preparation of the Museum's annual Form 990 and 990-T.
In addition to management responsibilities, the VP must have the ability to communicate and work productively with colleagues, the Board of Trustees, the Director of Internal Audit and external auditors. The VP will support the CFO and CIO in their roles as they serve as a liaison to the Budget and Finance, Investment, and Audit committees of the Board.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide financial and business expertise on a day-to-day basis. Advise the Senior Vice President and CFO, President and other institutional leaders.
  • Consult with colleagues to make wise and timely decisions regarding the acquisition, use, monitoring and disposal of institution assets.
  • Provide staff liaison support and expertise to the Board of Trustees, specifically provides staff support to the Budget and Finance Committee, the Investment Committee, and the Audit Committee. Participates in other Board of Trustee committees at the discretion of the Senior Vice President and CFO.
  • Directs and oversees staff in the following operations: Financial Affairs, Endowment Accounting Management, Post Award Grant Management, Payroll, Accounts Payable and Receivables, Purchasing, and Revenue Security. Establishes and maintains policies, procedures, and practices in each area that are consistent with legal obligations (with support from the Office of General Counsel), best business practice, and the needs of the Museum.
  • Serves on standing operations committees and ad hoc committees at the discretion of the SVP & CFO.
  • In collaboration with the SVP & CFO, VP for Budget and Financial Planning and other Museum leaders, assures ongoing and careful monitoring of cash flow and divisional use of budgeted resources.
  • In partnership with the VP for Budget and Financial Planning, ensures the development of a balanced annual operating budget for submission to the Board for approval, as well as a rolling five-year budget plan.
  • Works closely with the SVP & CFO and members of the leadership team to administer the Museum, including the establishment of policies, procedures, and practices. Work with the SVP & CFO, executive leadership, and other Committees to assess current programs and functions and to plan future programs and functions.


The expected salary range for the VP of Finance and Controller is $275,000/annual - $300,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business or finance.

  • CPA required.
  • Experience working with cultural institutions, not-for-profit or education organizations, or institutions of higher education.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in finance and operations management of a complex organization.
