Job Description:

  • The Mental Health Continuum Initiative (MHC) is a school- and community-based program designed to build a stronger continuum of care to improve the provision of mental health services to students and families. MHC is a cross-agency partnership between NYC Public Schools, NYC Health + Hospitals, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • Schools participating in this initiative will receive expanded, appropriate, and timely care for students struggling with mental health challenges, through a culturally responsive and family-centered approach, via virtual and in-person sessions from school, home, and NYC Health + Hospitals clinics. MHC is currently being rolled out across 50 participating schools, including 5 District 75 schools. All participating schools are in the South Bronx and Central Brooklyn.
  • A background check is required, (fingerprinting amounting to $102.75). This fee is refundable after one month of employment.


Position Summary:

  • To support the implementation of youth voice activities connected to the Mental Health Continuum Initiative (MHC), the Youth Engagement Liaison will focus on enhancing youth engagement in mental health and wellness initiatives, ensuring that vendor services are well-received in participating schools, as well as leading advisory board sessions and related leadership activities. Work tasks include but are not limited to the following:
  • Serve as a facilitator for advisory board sessions, promoting active participation and engagement among youth participants.
  • Guide and support youth leaders in developing actionable recommendations for the Mental Health Continuum Initiative and related Office of Community Supports and Wellness (OCSW) workstreams.
  • Foster an inclusive, open, and safe environment that encourages the expression of diverse perspectives and ideas.
  • Ensure that mental health services and programs provided by external vendors are well-received in participating schools.
  • Assist in coordinating logistics for vendor services, ensuring that programs are aligned with the needs and goals of students and schools.
  • Act as a liaison between schools, students, and vendors to ensure smooth implementation and resolve any issues that arise.
  • Support the development and execution of youth-driven activities related to mental health awareness, education, and advocacy.
  • Collaborate with school staff, students, and external partners to create opportunities for youth to take leadership roles in mental health and wellness initiatives.
  • Assist with organizing and promoting events, workshops, and forums that amplify youth voices on mental health and wellness issues.
  • Contribute to the reporting and evaluation of activities to ensure alignment with program goals and outcomes.
  • Participate in regular check-ins and team meetings to share updates, insights, and recommendations for improvement.


Education Requirements:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and one year of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and one year of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1 " or "2 " above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1 " above.


Preferred Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust with diverse groups of students, educators, and vendors.
  • Strong skills in relationship management and project implementation.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues affecting youth, including awareness of the Mental Health Continuum.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office applications, e.g., Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint and ability to use digital tools for communication, reporting, and coordination.
  • Experience facilitating group discussions or workshops, particularly with youth, is an asset.
  • An understanding of the complexities of systems that homeless students and their families face, and of the intersections of issues, including trauma, mental health, and domestic violence.
