Overview

The Histotechnician is responsible for performing routine histopathological tasks including microtomy, embedding, and special staining procedures in preparing specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. When necessary, will assist the Pathologist with grossing of specimens, preparing them for processing by ensuring proper labeling and accessioning of all submitted specimens. They ensure correct charging and documentation for each specific case, i.e. number of blocks, slides and labels. Assists with frozen sections.

Responsibilities

Cut routine paraffin sections of surgical tissue for microscopic examination in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Prepare equipment and reagents for processing, embedding, microtomy and processing of tissue. Perform routine and special staining techniques. Label, file, discard and maintain tissue, slides, and blocks.
Perform various Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations and protocols. Evaluates acceptability as associated with department testing requirements.
Retrieves all specimens from various hospital departments as needed, consistently demonstrates competence in preparing specimens for grossing by receiving, accession, organize, number, label patient containers and print cassettes per protocol. Maintaining specimen integrity with shared specimens in the clinical lab.

Evaluates acceptability as associated with department testing requirements. Register outreach account for specimens in computer utilizing knowledge of LIS and HIS. Performs special stains, assists with radiology procedures, frozen sections and cytological preparations as needed, in accordance with established procedures. Maintains a clean and safe work area. Keeping the gross area free of tissue fluid and debris. Follows established laboratory safety procedures in accordance with those of regulatory bodies. Perform and document required instrument maintenance, completing department logs and integrity of all stains. Record Quality Control data per policy. Assists with troubleshooting technical problems, or notifying appropriate personnel for assistance. Maintains and monitors daily supplies, ensures proper labeling and stores supplies appropriately, monitors for outdates and notifies leader when supplies are needed. Appropriately files slides and blocks. Organizes retained surgical specimens for shelf storage until appropriate time for disposal. Retrieves all specimens from various hospital departments as needed, consistently demonstrates competence in preparing specimens for grossing by receiving, accession, organize, number, label patient containers and print cassettes per protocol. Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $25.81per hour - $43.1per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
