Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics

In Residence Faculty Series

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals are recruiting an accomplished and dynamic faculty member with expertise in early life risk factors for obesity, maternal and child health, and the impact of nutritional factors on infectious diseases. Appointment will be made at the Full Professor rank of the In Residence faculty series. Academic rank is commensurate with experience.

The selected candidate will join a major academic medical center and established fellowship training program. This position may have responsibilities at both the San Francisco and Oakland campuses and would actively contribute to the Department's mission of excellence in research, education, and patient care.

Position Description:

We are seeking a highly qualified individual with a strong background in anthropology and epidemiology, with specific interests in:



  • Evaluating early life risk factors for obesity in high-risk populations.
  • Investigating maternal exposures during pregnancy and early-life feeding decisions that contribute to obesity risk.
  • Understanding the relationship between nutritional factors and the progression of HIV and HHV-8, with a focus on sub-Saharan African populations.
  • Conducting research on pediatric undernutrition and its impact on HIV progression.
  • Studying the role of telomere length in obesity, stress, and metabolic diseases.
  • Assessing the association between changes in stool microbiome and obesity/metabolic diseases.


Required Qualifications:



  • PhD in Anthropology with significant experience in epidemiology.
  • Proven track record of research in early childhood obesity, maternal and child health, and nutritional factors affecting infectious diseases.
  • Experience with longitudinal cohort studies and translational research.
  • Strong publication record in high-impact journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead research projects, secure grant funding, and mentor trainees.
  • Eligibility for appointment as Full Professor.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in academic medicine.


The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $170,300-$309,800. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
