Ability to use a computer, supervise and maintain an effective working relationship with a diverse work force and administration, safely operate and use various grounds equipment and machinery, and make minor mechanical repairs and adjustments to motorized grounds equipment.

Membership in Turfgrass or Professional Lawncare Associations.
Required License or Certification

Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
Grounds Supervisor who plans, schedules and supervises working crews in the general upkeep and maintenance of the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other local off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Main focus will be on North Campus and off-site locations, but not limited to those areas. Services also include sanitation (collection and removal of trash and recyclables), moving and hauling, event setups, concrete work, maintenance of streets and paths, lay brick walks and construction of wooden benches as required.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Grounds Department provides maintenance and upkeep for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Other services include sanitation (trash collection and removal), grounds maintenance and upkeep, landscaping, moving/hauling, and setting up for special events.
Work Hours 8 hrs M-F (between 6am-4pm); work overtime and alternate weekends (3 hrs on Saturday and 2 hrs on Sunday); REQUIRED to work during adverse weather (snow, ice, other emergencies).

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies


Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
Work as zone manager for Zones 3 and 4 in supervising day-to-day maintenance of 200 acre main campus, local off-campus properties, and athletic complex (stadium, athletic and practice fields).

Coordinates with Assistant Grounds Superintendent on any landscape project installation/renovation in designated areas for approval and implementation.

Supervise day-to-day garbage collection and trash removal for the entire campus handled by a machine operator and a general utility worker (backup vehicle operator) if needed.

Supervise and schedule moving and hauling if needed.

Identify training needs and provide instruction on best practices in grounds maintenance, equipment usage, and safety procedures.

Supervise groundskeeping staff to ensure high-quality and timely completion of assigned tasks.

Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback for professional development.
Make daily work schedules and assignments.

Review work performed at various stages and upon completion.

Trains and applies high maintenance techniques/standards equivalent to the certified standards for lawn and landscape maintenance.

Maintain various work records, prepare reports, prioritize work and ever changing work demands.

Operate and inspect various grounds equipment, perform minor repair, make recommendation for major repair or replacement.

Recommend the use of new tools, products and processes and/or machinery to facilitate an efficient and effective grounds maintenance plan.

Supervise Grounds Department in absence of senior grounds supervisors.

Insures new/existing staff receive proper safety training.

Practice safety in operation and use of grounds equipment: lifting, moving and hauling; wearing authorized safety gear.

Analyzes and interprets OSHA safety and university policies and procedures.

Ensures overall safety objectives are met.

Develops and ensures participation in safety training programs to enhance employee knowledge.

Provide guidance on proper handling and application of chemicals, such as fertilizers and herbicides.

Required Competency Planning and Organizing Work
Duties
Prepare annual grounds maintenance calendar in order to plan and prepare for scheduled maintenance and seasonal athletic activities.

Maintain and provide acceptable, safe and playable athletic surfaces and band practice areas.

Prioritize maintenance of utmost importance - irrigation, mowing, fertilization and aeration as well as baseball infield and pitcher's mound.

Plan for grounds maintenance (to include aeration, seeding, fertilization, and broadleaf/weed control) and oversee set up for seasonal events held in the Athletic Complex (i.e., track, football, softball, spring practice, band practice) to include event operation, set-up for marking fields, boundaries, track meets and judges.

Plan and oversee maintenance and irrigation on campus.

Supervise day-to-day collection of recyclables and refuse.

Insure staff receive training in proper handling of recycling to avoid contamination.

Collect recycling data for report preparation by the recycling coordinator.

Develop and implement schedules for routine maintenance of landscaped areas, lawns, trees, shrubs, and hardscapes.

Coordinate special projects, such as seasonal plantings, erosion control, and event preparation.

Prioritize tasks based on campus needs, weather conditions, and project deadlines.
Landscape design, prep and install plant material according to American Society of Landscape Architects.

Maintain equipment inventory and calibrate equipment.

Mix and apply chemicals.

Maintain chemical inventory and safety data sheets.


Required Competency Budgeting
Duties
Prepare requisitions and processes invoices for supplies, materials and equipment ensuring compliance with purchase procedures.

Determine and procure required materials for landscaping projects, chemical applications, and routine upkeep.

Monitor the use of supplies and ensure the availability of inventory to prevent project delays.
Reallocate resources when necessary, recommend new tools/equipment, and operate within assigned budget.

Prepare athletic purchase orders and meet with Athletic personnel for approvals and athletic field maintenance discussions.


Required Competency Customer Service
Duties
Meet with customers (i.e. Athletics officials, contractors/vendors, university personnel) to discuss set up arrangements, maintenance and other requirements for a successful event.

Collaborate with other departments to coordinate services and ensure campus aesthetics align with institutional goals.
