Primary Purpose of Position
The Building Services Technician has primary responsibility of housekeeping and building services activities throughout the Student Union to ensure the building is maintained to established unit standards during his/her shift. A technician supports the cleanliness and maintenance of spaces in and around the building as directed that best meet the needs of the university community including, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, vacuuming,replenishing supplies & products, glass cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, wall washing, and dusting. He/She reports to the shift supervisor, who will coordinate the daily schedules and any special assignments, and will utilize and properly maintain cleaning equipment, based on standard operating procedures, to departmental specifications. He/She may work a staggered schedule, and will serve as an essential employee during holidays, emergencies or inclement weather.
Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

University Preferred Qualifications:
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, one year of experience demonstrating the ability to follow instructions in operating specialized floor-cleaning or other cleaning equipment and in performing medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Job Duties

  • Cleans and maintains all assigned interior and designated exterior building areas, performing cleaning-related tasks including, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, vacuuming, replenishing supplies & products, glass cleaning, carpet and upholstery cleaning, wall washing, and dusting.
  • Reports to the Shift Supervisor, who will coordinate the daily schedules and any special assignments.
  • Serves as an essential employee during holidays, emergencies or inclement weather.
  • Cleans all assignments according to the interior and exterior Standard Operating Procedures established by the department.
  • Maintains proper use of chemicals according to the manufacturer's guidelines and supervisor's instructions.
  • Duties may include performing housekeeping and floor maintenance, grounds keeping, custom room set-ups, collecting recyclables, operating laundry machines and performing laundry-handling duties.

Other Work Responsibilities

  • Installs routine products and equipment per instructions.
  • Assists in equipment maintenance and reports any issues to the supervisor.
  • Determines the proper use of maintenance products and processes in assigned tasks, and follows instructions on labels.
  • Works together with other staff members to accomplish departmental goals and objectives.
  • Check 25 live event documentation to determine work scheduling for events & meetings in the Student Union, and adjust accordingly.
  • Interacts with Student Union clients, including students, guests, staff, faculty, and administrators, in a friendly, open, honest, and accepting manner.
  • Understands the needs of a variety of clients, responding to customer requests in a timely manner.
  • Recognizes, addresses and resolves potential problems in service, and resolves customer complaints without incident.
  • Treats customers courteously and with respect at all times.
  • Acquires necessary knowledge for higher performance through academic, apprenticeship, and/or on-the-job training.
  • Exhibits a confident and positive attitude at all times.
  • Understands the needs of a variety of clients, responding to customer requests in a timely manner.
  • Proactively identifies and anticipates building/ customer needs.
  • Identifies and refers non-standard problems to supervisor and or management staff
  • Perform all other work duties assigned by supervisor as needed

Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Prior experience in higher education facilities; previous experience in a Student Union or event driven facility is highly preferred.
  • 2-4 years experience in the housekeeping, floor care, or related field.
  • Must have experience operating various Environmental Services cleaning equipment.
  • Working knowledge of computers and word processing software.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Team-oriented approach, a positive attitude, and the ability to work together as part of a team.
  • Proper use of ladders, Motorized Lifts

Necessary Licenses or Certifications
Where applicable, must be eligible for required certification.
