About the Position

The Bridge/Structural Engineer Senior provides specialized engineering expertise to support Maricopa County's bridge and structural engineering needs. This role involves developing plans, specifications, estimates, approvals, and advice and providing expert opinion/testimony. The position requires performing and overseeing high-complexity structural engineering work, designing, developing, and managing diverse bridge/structural projects or programs, making and contributing to high-impact decisions, and guiding and supervising Engineers, Associate Engineers, and Technicians. This position will bear full responsibility for all aspects of assigned Maricopa County projects. A strong background in structural engineering for various transportation projects and other types of structures is essential for this role.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field

  • Five years of professional civil engineering work experience

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona Registration within six months of employment

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Six or more years of professional civil engineering work experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Engineering in which an emphasis was placed on Bridge/Structural Engineering design and analysis

  • Five years of direct and relevant experience as a Bridge or Structural Engineer on transportation construction projects

  • Regular user of computer-aided design and bridge/structural engineering software products

  • Experience in federally funded design and construction projects

  • Fieldwork experience

  • National Bridge Inspection certification

  • Experience with permit reviews

  • Experience in the management of contracts and work assignments for consultants and/or contractors

Job Contributions

  • Prepare plans, specifications, and estimate packages for the bridge/structural needs for various projects at various phases (i.e., new, replacement, rehabilitation, and preventative maintenance)

  • Review the work of others for completeness, sound analyses, and compliance with standards and regulatory considerations, including but not limited to the review of work of licensed and non-licensed engineers/consulting engineers, engineering associates, inspectors and construction administration staff, fabricators, licensed and non-licensed contractors, industry specialists, etc.

  • Work in a team environment to develop engineering services and products for various Maricopa County transportation and other projects

  • Participate on technical and advisory teams; manage, lead, and direct projects and project teams through direct involvement in the work and communication and coordination with team members in assuring project goals and objectives are met; monitor and control time, costs, and resources to ensure that work can be accomplished according to plan; prepare and update project schedules, manage budgets and expenditures; prepare and present reports on project performance and financial status; monitor project coordination and communication with other engineers, personnel and agencies to identify and resolve issues

  • Provide backup coverage when managers and/or supervisors are absent; assign or delegate work to others; lead project teams

  • Perform bridge inspections for project and inventory/asset management and information purposes, providing expert reporting and recommendations

  • Provide reviews and final approvals for overload truck permit loads across Maricopa County bridges

  • Provide expert engineering comments, opinions, guidance, and approvals as necessary

  • Provide technical assistance on contract development and requirements, contract objectives, and scope of work; review and manage design and construction projects under contract

  • Serve on interview and review panels for hiring personnel, consulting engineering firms, and specialty engineering/construction/inspection services

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Exerting 20 - 25 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly

  • The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

  • Long hours working on a personal computer using a wide range of office and engineering software. Driving county vehicles to and from various bridges and construction sites. Various bridge inspection equipment and tools are used when field visits are necessary

Protective Equipment Required

  • Fieldwork requires wearing a safety vest, safety glasses, hard hat, work boots, and protective clothing. Ear protection is required as field conditions warrant
