Overview

The phlebotomy coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the daily operations of specimen procurement and specimen receiving. In addition, this person is a professional who has been trained and understands tasks pertaining to the effect of pre-analytical processes in detection and measurement of components of health or disease. Duties include collection, transportation, ordering, labeling, and processing of specimens as well as assisting with scheduling, providing direction, and working with the Manager to ensure a smoothly-run, patient- centric phlebotomy department for inpatient and outpatient laboratories.

Responsibilities

Responsible for supervising the daily operations of the phlebotomy team for inpatient and outpatient locations, phlebotomy processes, and specimen processing. Schedules staff in phlebotomy areas and redistribution of staff as needed to cover unscheduled absences, vacations or vacancies. Monitors uncollected specimens regularly to ensure that all specimens/orders have been handled appropriately. Determines acceptability of specimens within guidelines; recognizes inappropriate specimens and rejects them. Works closely with staff to ensure that policies and procedures are followed. Provides guidance and then communicates instances of non-compliance to the manager. Updates procedure manual as needed. Ensures procedures and pertinent policies for lab are compliant with CAP regulations. Responsible for adhering to regulatory standards for both CAP, Joint Commission, and IDPH. Ensure other reference materials are maintained and updates. Demonstrates problem solving skills such as seeking solutions in order to reduce RL patient safety events. Ensures timeliness of testing by organizing work in phlebotomy and receiving to facilitate receipt of specimens in the testing sections ensuring prompt turnaround times for test result reporting. Maintains clean and well-maintained instruments, refrigerators, freezers, work and storage areas. Completes thorough investigation and documentation of all incidents and enters events in RL Solutions system. Demonstrates problem solving skills such as seeking solutions in order to reduce RL patient safety events. Possesses knowledge of workflow in testing sections uses this knowledge to improve and alter processes in receiving section. Teaches and coordinates the training of students, peers, and new employees in phlebotomy and receiving. Ensures all competencies are completed and filed in employee's records. Assesses proficiency of new phlebotomy staff by working one on one with them and rounding with the phlebotomist on draws. Submits service updates as needed. Attends staff meetings and communicates concerns of phlebotomy staff as well as other issue or changes. Assists during high volume times where needed while organizing and prioritizing work to not cause delays. Keeps abreast of procedural changes and communicates changes to staff both verbally, written form and via email. Demonstrates Carle Health values and standards of behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPPA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. Acts as a liaison with both internal and external customers including nursing, ED, nursing homes and outpatient areas. Works with Manager to hire new staff interviews prospective applicants, orients newly hired staff, coaches existing staff as needed. Maintains stock levels and in charge of ordering for the phlebotomy department in all locations.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $21.43per hour - $35.79per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
