Job Summary

Under the general management & supervision of the Sterile Processing manager, the supervisor acts as the Sterile Processing department, clinical expert for assigned duties. The supervisor performs supports and coordinates activities in the Sterile Processing department, in reference to scheduled and unscheduled surgical case management and provides direction and guidance, to include all Ancillary and Ambulatory departments. The supervisor participates as a team member by performing all Sterile Processing duties. The supervisor assumes department management duties in absence of the Sterile Processing department manager. The supervisor monitors, educates and directs assigned sterile processing technicians to achieve optimum performance, efficiency, and quality out comes.

The supervisor performs all Sterile Processing department responsibilities and duties. Ensures all Surgical, Ambulatory clinics, and Ancillary department instruments are available for daily cases. Also participates in Sterile Processing department leadership meetings, and other scheduled meetings, to include Sterile Processing department staff interviews, education and corrective action, when necessary. This position exists to help the manager develop and supervise the staff and functions of the entire department. The supervisor runs the daily operations on their shift and develops technicians to ensure appropriate decontamination and sterilization and assists the manager with the development of policies and procedures, and implements programs associated with these responsibilities. The supervisor ensures associate safety and adherence to regulatory agency recommendations related to the processing area.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises functions of staff in department to meet CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, State, APIC, and Joint Commission guidelines and standards, as required. (10%)
  • Assist with establishing policies and procedures for decontaminating, setting up and sterilization of instruments and equipment. Supervisors shall maintain a safe, functional and effective work environment for patients, staff and other individuals. (10%)
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient practices for decontamination, instrument assembly, and sterilization of all reprocessed instruments and equipment. (10%)
  • Maintain twenty four (24) hour, seven days a week and accountability for all personnel and activities occurring in the Sterile Processing department. (10%)
  • Provide direct and effective supervision to ensure timely delivery of clean and/or sterile instrumentation and medical equipment. (10%)
  • The supervisors shall actively support and pursue quality improvement for the department and organization. The supervisors shall analyze the department daily needs, and study new products equipment and techniques. (10%)
  • Maintain adequate department staffing levels to ensure daily operation services to the Operating Room. (5%)
  • Partner with the Sterile Processing site manager in evaluating change in policies and procedures, and implements appropriate systems to accommodate these changes. (5%)
  • Conduct departmental orientation, training, skills review, and assists the site manager with educational programs to maintain high staff performance standards. (5%)
  • Assist with recruitment and selection of new employees. Provide feedback for use in staff probationary and annual Performance Evaluation. (5%)
  • Monitor inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies, preventing waste and controlling costs. (5%)
  • Assist the site manager, as assigned, in developing and reporting quality assurance reports to appropriate committees. (5%)
  • Provide ongoing communications with staff and management of all Ambulatory & Ancillary departments on a daily basis. (5%)
  • Provide a forum for staff involvement in problem identification and resolution. The Supervisors will meet regularly with management to share information regarding department activities. (5%)

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years Sterile Processing experience required and
  • Supervisor experience preferred

Licenses:

  • CSPDT-Certified SPD Technician - CBSPD - Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution required OR
  • CRCST-Certified Registered Central Service Technician - Tradesmen International required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and practices of the Denver Health values on a daily basis, by treating patients, family members and colleagues with respect.
  • The supervisor will demonstrate safety knowledge to reduce risk.
  • Ability to carry out professional standards, statutes, regulations, hospital and departmental policies and standards of care.
  • Maintain effective communication with all hospital leadership, with all physicians, co-workers, patients and visitors to promote patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Apply basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology to their day to day functions.
  • The supervisor will have the ability and understanding to clean assemble & sterilize instrumentation to be used to administer patient care.
  • Ability to research Intentions for usage standard for all instruments used in the Operating Room, and throughout the hospital.
  • Supervisors will work closely with surgeons to request equipment, products, instrumentation and supplies.
  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Sterile Processing Microsystems, Centricity Time and Attendance, One Source document management and Policy Stat.
