General Information:

The Machine Safety Specialist serves as a health and safety subject matter expert to Risk Management as well as to other members of the greater university community. He/she provides training, safety and technical guidance relating to industrial machines commonly found in wood and metal-working shops and maker spaces, material and personnel handling equipment, construction processes, with the potential to function as a first line supervisor for other members of the Risk Management team. Develops, implements, trains on, and coordinates university safety programs relating to facility, construction, academic activities, research, and industrial operations. Coordinates and performs inspections, audits, sampling, analysis, and record keeping in compliance with federal and state regulations and guidelines for assigned program areas and oversees staff performing the same. Uses technical knowledge, training, and experience to facilitate compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as university policy to reduce exposure of faculty, staff, students, associates, and visitors to hazards relating to the use of power tools, industrial machinery, and material and personnel handling equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Develops, implements, and coordinates university safety programs relating to facility, construction, academic activities, research, and industrial operations. Coordinates and performs inspections,incident investigations, audits, sampling, analysis, training and record keeping in compliance with federal and state regulations and guidelines for assigned program areas and oversees staff performing the same.

Uses technical knowledge of machines and equipment, safety knowledge, training, and experience to promote university compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as university policy to reduce hazard exposure of faculty, staff, students, associates, and visitors and improve safety and overall compliance posture.

Assists the Risk Management Accident Investigator with safety and vehicle-related investigations and interviews and recommends corrective actions, including engineering and administrative controls, and PPE. Provide competent training on safe operation of 10-passenger vans, forklifts, scissor and articulating lifts, equipment-hauling trailers, and other machinery. Team with Facilities Management and their Transportation department to conduct bus rodeos as a mechanism to enhance bus driver safety.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
* Significant professional experience with industrial machines or similar experience in the manufacturing industry.
* Significant professional health and safety experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, laboratory safety, shop safety or other appropriate science-related employment experience.
* Reasonable knowledge of industrial hygiene practices, modern occupational health, safety, environmental, or engineering principles and practices, and rules/regulations.
* Reasonable knowledge of federal and state health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA & VOSH, etc).
* Knowledge of and ability to use computer applications, such as Microsoft Office, email, and databases.
* Work independently, exercise initiative and judgment, and provide follow through with customers.
* Must have a valid driver's license.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
* Able to provide technical training/guidance and clearly communicate how to safely operate industrial and artisan machines as well as hand tools.
* Mechanical aptitude for operating vehicles and material handling equipment.

Additional Considerations:
* Able to pass physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
