Boiler House Engineer

A Day in the Life:

Boiler House Stationary Engineer shall support all functions of the department including, but not limited to troubleshooting, monitoring, and maintaining all equipment, and performing minor maintenance as needed to ensure that reliable utilities are supplied to the plant.

Position Details:

  • This is a union hourly position.
  • 12-hour shift, 7am-7pm or 7pm to 7am
  • Must work every other weekend and Holidays if scheduled.
  • Hourly Pay Rate $39.36

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Routine servicing and minor maintenance of the boilers and auxiliary equipment
  • Ensuring operation of proper pressure in the boilers
  • Follow all plant safety rules and regulations while working in the operating areas.
  • Detect any malfunctions in the process and immediately repair or ensure that repairs are made.
  • Keep repair and service maintenance records as designated by area supervision.
  • Keep records of meter and gauge readings and fuel consumption of the boilers.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain wastewater treatment plant pumps, valves, filters; Take readings of gauges and temperatures and records readings; read meters and gauges and regulate the flow of wastewater; Grease and oil pumps and equipment as needed.
  • Complete forms for maintenance records; collect and record data for regulatory compliance.
  • Performs laboratory testing of potable water; performs arithmetic calculations to determine necessary changes in chemical dosage and treatment.
  • All other task as assigned by supervisor or designee.
  • Food Safety and Quality - Follow company Quality Systems and implement Food Safety in the use of approved chemicals and additives related to operation, routine servicing and maintenance of the boilers and auxiliary equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent qualification from an accredited institution
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Perfect attendance (discretion of department)
  • Must be a member of Local 399 Operating Engineers Union or willing to enroll in said union within 90 days of accepting position as operating engineer. Apply for and obtain Stationary Engineer's license within three years of accepting position.
  • Possess or willing to obtain/maintain a non-transient, non-community water certification through IDPH.
    Note: For each additional skill, BSL +$1.50, PWL +$.75, KL +.75, RETA +$1.00

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer working knowledge of high-pressure boilers along with basic mechanical safety and have a basic understanding of the equipment in the Boiler and Wastewater areas.
  • Minor maintenance including the ability to disassemble, repair, and assemble plant machinery.
  • This individual must be able to attend all scheduled training.
  • The individual in this position may be required to work maintenance downtimes in the Utilities department.
