The Position

Scientist 3 - Translational Medicine, Oncology

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The Translational Medicine function at Genentech has a vision to transform patient care through borderless, innovative, and rigorous translational science that will catalyze the development of new medicines, accelerate drug development timelines, and discover new therapeutic strategies. To fulfill our vision, we recruit talented and highly motivated scientists to develop and execute innovative biomarker and diagnostic strategies to drive clinical development through all phases of the portfolio, and conduct foundational disease-oriented translational research to maximize our scientific and clinical impact.

We are seeking a dedicated and independent Scientist 3 to lead lab-based translational research and discovery efforts in oncology.

The Opportunity:

This is a hands-on, lab-based position within the Hematology group in Translational Medicine, Oncology, that requires close collaboration with colleagues and departments across multiple functions in Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED), including, Computational Sciences, Molecular/Discovery Oncology, Cancer Immunology and Cellular & Tissue Genomics. As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will:

Perform translational research to uncover key characteristics of disease biology, propel novel target discovery, enable portfolio entry and develop biomarkers and assays to enable clinical development of our candidate medicines.

  • Design and execute in vitro and in vivo experiments to validate biological and therapeutic hypotheses derived from clinical biomarker data from immune engager programs (T cell bispecifics and CAR T)

  • Design and lead independent projects aimed to elucidate key mechanistic determinants of therapeutic response and resistance and to enable in-depth understanding of fundamental disease biology

  • Collaborating with subject matter experts from across gRED to synthesize, integrate, and interpret experimental, clinical and computational findings to inform decision-making on key projects and programs

  • Work in a cross-functional manner to drive translational innovation within the group through developing new approaches and deploying cutting edge technologies (including but not limited to multi-omic assays and single cell platforms) especially focusing on physiologically relevant disease models and clinical specimens

  • Contribute to lab goals, organization and culture while helping to identify new research opportunities

  • Communicate results through publications and oral presentations

Who You Are:

  • You hold a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Cancer Biology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines, with 6+ years of relevant work or educational experience, including hands-on laboratory research experience.

  • Deep understanding of cancer biology and tumor immunology and expertise in translational research as evidenced by significant contributions to high impact publications and patents.

  • Demonstrated experience in independently leading lab-based research projects using various approaches, including high-quality functional assays, conventional and spectral flow cytometry, molecular biology and immuno-oncology assays, gene editing and single cell workflows

  • Hands-on experience with primary patient samples, and cutting edge methods preferably in the context of T cell biology or T cell directed therapies is highly valued.

  • Working knowledge of single cell approaches, spectral flow cytometry and other cutting edge techniques preferably with primary specimens; experience with ex vivo culture and functional profiling of blood and bone marrow is highly desirable

  • Possess a thoughtful and meticulous approach to experimental design, execution, and documentation, bringing scientific rigor and creativity to problem solving. Highly organized, with excellent written/oral communication skills.

  • Ability to effectively progress multiple projects in parallel, distill complex issues and clearly articulate solutions
