Job Summary

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) specializing in Blood and Marrow Transplant, Chimeric Antigen Receptors (CAR-T) and Bispecific T-cell Engagers (BiTE) therapies will serve as an expert clinician, educator, and consultant within the healthcare team. The CNS will focus on developing and implementing educational programs, providing clinical expertise, and improving patient outcomes through research and evidence-based practices.

In this role, the CNS will develop and implement educational programs, in-services to enhance staff knowledge and competency in transplant, CAR-T and BiTE therapies. Special attention will be given to identifying side effects and complications of treatment, particularly as therapy transitions to hybrid/outpatient settings. Acting as a resource nurse during the infusions of cellular products and BiTE therapies, the CNS will provide guidance to infusion staff on central line care, skin care, wound management, and proper treatment protocols.

The CNS will make clinical recommendations based on patient assessments and collaborate with patient care managers to administer appropriate medication and treatment. In collaboration with providers, nurse managers, and the quality team, the CNS will develop nursing practices, policies, and procedures related to blood and marrow transplant, CAR-T and BiTE therapy. Additionally, the CNS will provide patient and family education on treatment expectations, potential side effects, and self-management strategies.

Participation in research initiatives, clinical trials, and quality improvement projects related to blood and marrow transplant, CAR-T and BiTE therapies will be a key responsibility. The CNS will analyze data, identify trends, and implement evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes and quality of care. Contributing to the development, review, and revision of related policies, procedures, and protocols.

The CNS will serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers regarding CAR-T and BiTE therapies.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $209,447 - $235,840 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (HDFCCC) HBC Program provides compassionate, patient-centered care and our team of clinicians and researchers are dedicated to improving outcomes for all patients.

The UCSF Hematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy (HBC) Program provides the best care possible for patients with acute and chronic blood conditions. These conditions include, but are not limited to, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative neoplasms, aplastic anemia, immune thrombocytopenia, bleeding disorders, clotting disorders (thrombosis) and anemias. Some diseases are inherited while others are acquired, but all require specialized treatment. In addition, UCSF is a leader in blood and bone marrow transplants as well as cellular therapies, which are used to treat a number of blood disorders. Therapies have been developed and continue to be developed in solid-tumor diseases as well. Our expert transplant/cellular therapy team is comprised of doctors, nurses, social workers and additional health professionals who work together to care for individuals and their families throughout the transplant or cellular therapy process.

Apheresis and Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) are performed on the Parnassus campus at the Parnassus Infusion Center; inpatient procedures are performed as needed. The HBC Program provides apheresis services to autologous and allogeneic donors of hematopoietic and mononuclear cells. The HBC program also provides ECP for chronic graft vs. host disease treatment and for chronic lung allograft dysfunction following lung transplantation.

Required Qualifications


  • In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources
  • Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution specific to the infusion center site
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required
  • Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner
  • Hands-on clinical expertise with complex infusion patients, including specialty procedures, devices and equipment
  • Creative problem solver experienced in change management with the ability to adapt and thrive in a high-stress, fluid environment
  • Minimum five (5) years adult clinical nursing experience
  • Minimum five (5) years recent clinical adult hematology/oncology experience
  • Minimum two (2) years chemotherapy administration experience
  • Master's degree in nursing or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training

Preferred Qualifications


  • Current ACLS
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or BMTCN
  • Experience working in the academic and community medical center environments

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, or licensure / certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification ONS
