THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is currently searching for a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic to support our Indiana County Maintenance Organization! DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be responsible for executing skilled maintenance and repair tasks on a diverse range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, tractors, and various types of construction machinery such as rollers, sweepers, and mixers, as well as powered hand tools. Your duties will encompass repairs on diesel equipment, with the exception of diagnostics, parts rebuilding, and the repair of air brake systems and diesel engine fuel injection systems, including injectors and pumps.

You are required to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues by adhering to established safety protocols and utilizing appropriate protective gear. You will conduct visual inspections, make necessary manual adjustments, and communicate your findings both in writing and verbally. It is essential to remain vigilant in your work area to assist yourself and others in preventing potential risks and hazards. Additionally, you must promptly report any personal injuries or equipment-related incidents and seek appropriate medical attention to reduce the likelihood of further injury.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $54,279 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program; or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position requires possession of a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • Certain positions may require employees to possess a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
