Job Summary

The Lab Operations Supervisor is responsible for managing research lab operations by organizing and delegating tasks to research associates and laboratory staff, ensuring seamless support for various research projects. This role includes overseeing all administrative and laboratory procedures, with a particular focus on purchasing, inventory management and compliance, to maintain efficient workflow. The supervisor actively contributes to research projects, earning authorship or co-authorship, and supervises the development and execution of major, multi-disciplinary research initiatives. Additionally, the role involves designing instructional and experimental frameworks, recommending improvements to department policies and practices, identifying and managing potential risks, and collaborating with stakeholders to plan and coordinate the setup of new lab and office spaces. Typically operating within a large or multi-facility laboratory setting, this position requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual with proven experience in lab operations management, strong leadership skills, and a passion for fostering a collaborative and high-performing research environment.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $75,700 - $160,500 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Minimum of 5 years related experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience as lead/supervisor/manager.
• Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
• Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.
• Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
• Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
• Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects. Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration to effectively lead and motivate others. Conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and counsel assigned staff to develop cooperative working relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
• Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement.
• Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
• Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
• Advanced interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise all levels of staff.

• Advanced degree preferred.
