The Senior Vice President is accountable for the overall success and contract execution for high-profile Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Plans partner for Optum Rx. The role is responsible for developing and owning deep trusted relationships with C-suite executives and pharmacy/business leaders that drive strategic collaboration and promote long-lasting, mutually beneficial partnerships. You will also hold accountability for leading and developing a high-caliber, well-engaged client management team. Success is measured by client/market growth and retention, strategic leadership, financial performance, contract execution, employee engagement and the overall satisfaction of assigned clients. As Senior Vice President, you must be comfortable leading in an extremely fast-paced, complex environment and able to quickly understand/interpret how market events (i.e., federal regulations, state/local regulations, CMS requirements, drug manufacturer events, etc.) impact Health Plan clients and to advise proactively and react accordingly. You must possess a high degree of confidence, PMB sophistication, leadership strength, and executive presence. This role also requires a well-demonstrated business/financial acumen; salesmanship; innovation and the ability to successfully drive complex projects.

The role leads initiatives to collect and respond to market insights through strategy, product, and go-to-market actions allowing the Health Plans segment and OptumRx to achieve a dynamic and competitive marketplace position.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Develop and execute business plan strategies to maximize growth and opportunity
  • Establish and maintain solid personal relationships with key executives and decision-makers, including those within key consultant firms
  • Manage & drive client strategy with Optum Enterprise senior executives and peer leaders from to advocate for your clients and develop strategic and tactical plans to achieve desired annual growth targets and drive optimal strategic delivery
  • Own accountability for the contracts we maintain with assigned health plan clients and ensure proper monitoring and execution of contract deliverables
  • Drive & manage client renewal and market check activities working closely with several internal (e.g., pricing, underwriting, legal) and external (e.g., consultants; client) constituents
  • Manage the profit and loss statements for each assigned account and manage to an operating budget, upsell targets, and revenue growth goals
  • Accountable for establishing a solid team bench; recruiting, developing and evaluating talent; driving a motivated and engaged team; and developing a succession plan to accommodate for new growth
  • Forge high trust, highly effective internal relationships with teams such as underwriting, legal, product development, industry relations, operations and finance to identify strategic opportunities and drive a culture of continuous improvement
  • Closely monitor, engage and serve as a key point of escalation for high profile client issues
  • Provide input to product development teams to develop new or enhance existing products to meet market needs
  • Be a visible representative to the broader marketplace, and as such, demonstrates visionary thinking that sustains a competitive advantage
  • Delivers client satisfaction strategies that drive high NPS outcomes
  • Participate in sales meeting demonstrating high energy and critical thinking while communicating a unique value proposition

Required Qualifications:



  • 10+ years of health care experience and leadership experience
  • 10+ years of experience working within the Health Plan PBM/managed care pharmacy industry and deep understanding of its evolving dynamics and core competencies
  • Experience leading relationships and working with senior-level C-Suite executives and ability to lead innovative and forward-thinking discussions
  • Experience and highly competent in understanding PBM pricing and contracting models
  • Experience and demonstrated success in owning and managing client profitability profiles
  • Account Management experience with high profile Health Plan clients and demonstrated progressively increasing responsibility for client relationship management and consultation
  • Experience working with sales teams and support areas to complete Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and finalist presentations
  • Experience interpreting financial statements, identifying trends and driving strategic recommendations
  • Experience interpreting complex contracts; balance internal and external views; and effectively manage client negotiations
  • Extensive experience developing and delivering formal presentations to message and position information for maximum customer impact and influence
  • Willing or ability to travel up to 50%
  • Must be located within Central or Eastern Time Zone

  • Experience in Regulated Markets, with a solid emphasis on regulatory and compliance aspects
  • PBM Consulting Experience
  • Pharmacist
  • Experience effectively navigating and driving results in a highly complex, matrix environment

The salary range for this role is $191,800 to $364,800 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
