About the opportunity

Our Rocky Mountain/Plains Cultural Resources (CR) field execution team seeks a Paleontological Technician for our growing business. We are looking for a motivated individual to assist in the highest-quality project work by collecting accurate, thorough cultural resources data (HR Title: Cultural Resources Technician). SWCA Environmental Consultants is an employee-owned firm, providing a full spectrum of environmental services. The sub-regional cultural resources team conducts fieldwork throughout the Intermountain West and Northern Plains in a variety of environments and weather conditions. The work is demanding, exhausting, and rewarding. Fieldwork will require someone who is adaptable, level-headed, willing to learn, and has a good sense of humor.

This position will report into the Bismarck, ND office and will likely initially work on a major program in Wyoming. The is temporary (no benefits other than wellness time), hourly, 40+ hour per week position. Highly qualified remote (=distributed) employees will be seriously considered.

This position will close on February 3, 2025.


What you will accomplish

Your role will be to conduct paleontological fieldwork as a member of a survey crew, which can vary in size from 2 to 12 members. Responsibilities include conducting survey, shovel test pits and excavation units, data recovery, and associated field recording, including completion of field forms, digital photography and in-field mapping. This is a field position requiring travel and extensive time away from home, often working long hours in a variety of environments and conditions (including high altitude, extreme temperatures, steep slopes, inclement weather, etc.). Work in the office or laboratory is expected to be minimal.


Experience and qualifications for success

  • A Bachelor's Degree in paleontology or a closely related field is highly preferred
  • Previous paleontology monitoring experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience with a wide range of field methodologies including paleontological survey, testing, excavation, methodology, and monitoring for at least six (6) months is preferred.
  • Ability to travel to a remote location, hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, often in rugged terrain at high altitudes, while carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required; a pace of at least 8 miles per day is expected.
  • Knowledge of professional-grade GPS and tablet-based data applications is a plus.
  • Comfortable driving large pickup-trucks is highly preferred.

An employee in this Bismarck, ND - based position can expect a salary of $19.13/hour to $25.25/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
