Overview
The Business Banker is responsible for driving the success and growth of client portfolios within their assigned sales territory. As the primary relationship manager for the Bank, they oversee client interactions and exercise discretion and independent judgment in the credit process, including Credit Underwriting, Portfolio Management, and Risk Assessment. The role involves significant decision-making around credit grading, risk identification, and portfolio servicing. In addition to managing covenant compliance and collateral monitoring, the Business Banker ensures alignment with the Bank's strategic goals. The position also includes fulfilling the Bank's Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) requirements, contributing to the broader community engagement efforts. This role plays a crucial part in supporting the bank's business operations through proactive risk management and strategic portfolio oversight. Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Consistently meets and exceeds individual sales goals, including but not limited to deposits, loans, and other applicable metrics.
Independently expands existing relationships and secures new business through client referrals and cold-calling efforts outside of the banking center, aligning with and exceeding the Bank's strategic goals. Collaborates with the banking center team to generate, identify, qualify, and prioritize new prospects. Generates, identifies, qualifies, and prioritizes new prospects while nurturing the existing book of business. Engages regularly with the top 20 loan and deposit clients monthly, via phone or in person, to maintain relationships and identify cross-selling opportunities. Conducts research on existing clients to uncover additional cross-selling opportunities. Drives efforts to increase core deposits and actively contributes to loan funding. Develops sales proposals and strategies at an expert level, aligning with client needs and market demands. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the market, competitors, and maintains a strategic outlook for business growth. Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on all bank products and services, advising clients on the most suitable options. Establishes, expands, and maintains a network of referral sources. Prepares thoroughly for client interactions by conducting pre-call planning and organizing worksheets prior to joint client appointments. Assesses and meets clients' financial needs by analyzing their financial profiles, including relevant documentation such as tax returns, credit reports, personal financial statements, and debt schedules. Documents the relationship management process to ensure accurate records and follow-up actions. Analyzes clients' financial issues and recommends appropriate solutions tailored to their needs. Advocates for clients, securing the most appropriate credit and cross-selling bank products and services. Evaluates business, management, industry, financial, and structural risks, documenting assessments in credit approval documents. Leads complex sales initiatives and organizes customized proposal generation to address specific client needs. Develops and maintains strong relationships with all partners, ensuring alignment with business goals. Contributes actively to the banking center's success by participating in community activities and organizations. Adheres to the requirements of the S.A.F.E. Act and follows procedures, including notifying Human Resources of any changes in current status.
Qualifications
- 5-7 years of experience in business banking, commercial lending, or financial services, with a focus on business development and client relationship management.
- 2 + years of bank lending experience, including credit analysis and evaluating the financial health of business clients to recommend appropriate lending solutions.
Proven ability to meet and exceed sales goals, drive direct banking sales, credit support, and maximize cross-sell opportunities to increase relationship profitability. Exceptional consulting skills; ability to probe, listen, clarify and present information to advance sales transactions, deepen relationships. Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex financial data and business operations to assess client needs and offer appropriate solutions. Professional presentation and communication skills, effectively engaging with clients and stakeholders at all levels. Extensive knowledge of credit structuring and processing, with credit training preferred. Highly effective communication and influence skills, able to negotiate and build consensus with clients and colleagues. Superior organizational and time management skills, capable of managing multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of performance. Proven expertise in business development, consistently identifying opportunities to grow the client portfolio and expand business relationships. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, referral tracking programs, and other relevant banking software tools.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent work experience required.
