Division Overview

The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS Publications) publishes over 85 high-quality scholarly journals focused on chemistry and chemistry-related topics. It thus provides its members and the worldwide scientific community with a comprehensive collection of high-quality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences.

Department Overview

The Global Marketing Department within ACS Publications is responsible for developing marketing strategies and integrated campaign plans to engage our target audience and strengthen our relationships with them. The Department's objectives for engaging our audience are to increase the brand equity and, ultimately, enable the revenue capture for the Division's product lines of over 85 journals, eBooks, and a range of digital offerings. The current target audience includes researchers, authors, reviewers, editors, institutional/corporate librarians, administrators, funders, ACS members, and the range of end-users.

Position Summary

The Senior Market Intelligence Analyst, part of the ACS Publications Market Research team, is responsible for gathering, analyzing, synthesizing, and disseminating actionable competitive intelligence to support strategic decision-making. This role will lead competitive analysis efforts, monitor market trends, and provide insights that guide product development, marketing strategies, and overall business growth. The position requires a deep understanding of the academic publishing landscape. Key to success will be staying ahead of emerging trends in scholarly communication, expertly leveraging a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, competitor intel and industry reports, and recognizing those findings that will directly support decision-making and innovation within the organization.

This in-office position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Accountabilities



  • Competitive Analysis: Conduct in-depth analysis of competitors, including their products, pricing, go-to-market strategies, customer base, and positioning.
  • Market Monitoring: Track industry trends, emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and other market dynamics to identify potential risks and opportunities.
  • Strategic Insights: Translate competitive data into actionable insights that drive product roadmaps, marketing campaigns, sales enablement, and corporate strategy.
  • Awareness: Maintain a strong understanding of ACS Publications strategies, priorities and initiatives to guide identification and alignment of relevant industry trends and insights.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Leverages expert business, analytical and technical knowledge to lead discussions with cross functional teams and collaborate on solutions to highly complex business objectives.
  • Intelligence Gathering: Utilize a range of intelligence sources, including public filings, trade publications, financial reports, customer feedback, and market research, to keep up to date on competitive and market activities.
  • Reporting & Communication: Create comprehensive reports and presentations that clearly communicate findings to senior leadership, product teams, sales teams, and other key stakeholders.
  • Guidance: Succinctly delivers complex analysis/findings in a manner that conveys understanding, influences senior executives, garners support for recommendations, drives business decisions, and influences business strategy.
  • Benchmarking: Establish and maintain competitive benchmarking processes to measure company performance against key competitors.
  • Tool Management: Oversee competitive intelligence tools and platforms, ensuring accurate data collection and effective usage by the broader team.
  • Scenario Planning: Develop scenario analyses that anticipate market changes and competitor moves and recommend proactive strategies for the company.
  • Vendor management: Manage the work of vendors for specialized intelligence collection, ensuring high-quality deliverables and effective collaboration.


Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

College degree or equivalent experience or formal training along with the following qualifications:



  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in competitive/market intelligence, market research, strategy, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the academic publishing space with understanding of key competitors and market trends/dynamics.
  • Ability to analyze complex data sets and translate findings into meaningful business insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear, concise manner to senior leaders.
  • Experience with competitive intelligence platforms, CRM systems, and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau).
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a focus on long-term business success.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Familiarity with patent or IP analysis.
  • Background in scenario planning and risk assessment.
  • Prior management experience leading competitive intelligence or strategy teams.


This role is based in our Washington, D.C. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $92,00-$124,000 per year.

Job location: ACS operates in a hybrid capacity, and this position is based in Washington, DC. There is an expectation for significant presence in the office. Relocation assistance is available.

*A minimal amount of travel is required, typically between Columbus, OH and Washington, DC. Additional travel requirements within the US and abroad for scheduled meetings and industry conferences may be required with advanced notice.
