Provide required technical expertise to test, inspect, repair and maintain all critical and non-critical building HVAC/R systems and campus mechanical infrastructure. This role is pertinent to the proper operation, reliability and emergency preparedness of all HVAC/R and mechanical systems.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Develops, performs, and oversees preventative maintenance program of various HVAC/R systems and equipment including but not limited to: DX (CRAC units), heat exchangers, chillers, cooling towers, ice plants, forced draft boilers, VSD's, pumps, motors, HVAC/R controls, VAV systems, air handlers, kitchen equipment, associated electrical components and electronic devices.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and installs various small scale HVAC/R systems and equipment including but not limited: DX (CRAC units), heat exchangers, chillers, cooling towers, ice plants, forced draft boilers, VSDs, pumps, motors, HVAC/R controls, VAV systems, air handlers, kitchen equipment, associated electrical components and electronic devices.
  • Monitors, adjusts and troubleshoots the BAS and related HVAC/R controls to balance energy management with comfort control. Respond to routine and emergency service calls on a regular basis through supervisor assignments and work order systems.
  • As assigned by supervisor, oversee work being performed by contracted vendors for adherence to service contracts, capital project scopes and Code Requirements. Must provide updates to supervisor on regular basis.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as multi-meter, solder torch, vacuum pumps, various HVAC/R test equipment. Must maintain and operate equipment in effective and safe working condition.
  • Oversee parts inventory for HVAC/R related equipment. Researches, purchases and inventories equipment parts, chemicals and supplies. Must maintain detailed service records, equipment logs, trending reports and effectively communicate through verbal and written means.
  • Perform select electrical work for maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of HVAC/R equipment and components such as timers, VSD's, motors, controls, various wiring systems as needed.
  • Must be able to evaluate, read, troubleshoot and repair HVAC/R systems using documentation such as construction drawings, equipment manuals, ladder diagrams, etc.
  • Work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with all applicable codes and laws. Must be knowledgeable of EPA refrigerant requirements, ASHRAE standards, NFPA and lockout/tagout safety requirements.
  • Assists and serves as back up to other Facilities team members, Performs other duties as assigned. Must be willing to work overtime as required due to scheduled maintenance, building or equipment emergencies.
  • Responsible for the cooling systems in a highly controlled 24/7 data center environment.

Required skills:

  • 2+ years of commercial HVAC working experience.
  • Thorough understanding of HVAC/R theory principles and practices; Strong reasoning ability for troubleshooting complex HVAC/R and mechanical systems; Ability to interpret and apply information from schematics, wire diagrams, and construction documents; Broad range of computer skills for email communications, operating complex building systems, work order systems; Use and maintenance of trade specific materials, tools and instrumentation.
  • Under close supervision provides basic HVAC/R services for campus HVAC/R control systems, components and equipment.
  • Evidences a solid knowledge of HVAC/R principles and methods in completing scheduled and non-scheduled work orders.
  • Still acquiring higher level skills in testing, inspecting and troubleshooting complex HVAC/R systems.
  • High school diploma, supplemented by the completion of selected HVAC/R courses in a Union, private (in-house), military, or trade school program that includes theory and hands-on training as it relates to the HVAC/R trades.
  • EPA Refrigeration Certificate.
  • 25% domestic travel.
