Job Summary:



The University of Colorado, Department of Pathology is seeking a full-time (1.) FTE) Laboratory Manager for the Colorado Genetics Laboratory (CGL) cytogenetics laboratory. Specific responsibilities of this leadership position include managing laboratory personnel, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and maintaining high-quality testing services. The Laboratory Manager will also be involved in strategic planning, budgeting, with a focus on implementing new processes, technologies, and methodologies to enhance laboratory efficiency, accuracy, and quality. This role reports to the Laboratory Medical Director.

Examples of Work Performed

Leadership and Management - 20%:



  • Supervises and mentors laboratory staff, including hiring, new orientation, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Develops and implements policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensures adherence to laboratory protocols.
  • Fosters a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Facilitates clear channels of communication throughout the laboratory
  • Chairs Leadership and laboratory meetings.
  • Manager of Laboratory Supervisors.
  • Oversees resolution and/or mediation of personnel issues/conflicts.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Laboratory Operations - 20%:



  • Responsibility for day-to-day laboratory operations.
  • Anticipates CGL staffing levels and assigns work in conjunction with Directors, Managers, and Supervisors.
  • Oversees the processing and analysis of cytogenetic samples, including karyotyping, FISH, and chromosomal microarray techniques.
  • Ensures timely and accurate reporting of test results.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Oversees the management of service agreements.
  • Oversees inventory control.


Quality Assurance and Compliance - 20%:



  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, including CLIA, CAP, EPA, University of Colorado and other relevant standards.
  • Implements and monitors quality control/assurance programs to maintain high standards of testing accuracy and reliability.
  • Coordinates regular audits and inspections to ensure laboratory compliance.
  • Participates in the resolution of process and technical issues.
  • Member of the Quality Management Team and Quality Improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains compliance with all safety regulations, updates the Safety Manual annually, and performs periodic safety and ergonomic inspections
  • Coordinates the preparation of the annual Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement for the Denver Fire Department.
  • Coordinates with the Safety Officer to oversee the handling and disposal of hazardous chemical and biohazard waste.
  • Works with the Compliance Coordinator for CAP/CLIA inspection preparation.


Strategic Planning and Development: - 20%



  • Develops and manages the laboratory budget, including cost control and resource allocation.
  • Identifies and implements new processes, technologies, and methodologies to improve laboratory efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborates with other departments and stakeholders to support research and development initiatives.


Communication and Reporting - 20%:



  • Presents reports on laboratory performance, including quality metrics and financial performance.
  • Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and yearly review of QA indicators.
  • Attends QA meetings for data evaluation, summation, and improvements.
  • Communicates effectively with healthcare providers, institutional representatives, patients, and other stakeholders regarding assay results and laboratory services.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:



  • A bachelor's degree in biological science, nutrition, nursing, health, human services, psychology, counseling, social work, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • 5 year's of experience in a clinical laboratory with at least 3 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role


Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • 10 years of experience in a clinical cytogenetics laboratory, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • 5 years of experience supervising and overseeing cytogenetic specimen processing (wet lab processes)

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE $83,171-$105,793

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
