Job Summary:

The Division of Transplantation in The University of Wisconsin's Department of Surgery is recruiting for a dedicated Abdominal Organ Procurement Surgeon. UW Health operates a hospital-based organ procurement organization, the UWOTD (Organ and Tissue Donation), and the selected candidate will be an integral part of the UWOTD team. This surgeon will perform abdominal procurements within the UWOTD's donation service area (greater Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, and the upper peninsula of Michigan) as well as on occasional "fly out" recoveries to other donation service areas for import livers and pancreata. The UWOTD office in Madison, Wisconsin will serve as the primary location for this role. Appointment will be at a level consistent with the successful candidate's experience and track record of accomplishments in service, education, and academic activities.

The UW Division of Transplantation is one of the world's leading organ transplant programs, and has been on the forefront of transplant advancement since its creation in 1966. Surgeons and scientists in the Division of Transplantation have made innovative discoveries that are used throughout the world. The UW Health Transplant Center is one of the most experienced transplant programs in the nation. More than 20,000 organs have been transplanted at UW in the past 58 years, including adults, pediatrics and serving the Veteran's Hospital. University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation is recognized as one of the most successful organ procurement programs in the nation. As a result, our patients have among the shortest waiting times for organ transplants. The division currently supports eleven faculty surgeons and trains three to four transplant fellows annually. The UWOTD employs more than 60 team members across the disciplines of hospital and community development, family services, clinical and recovery specialists in the organ donation process at its primary office in Research Park, two miles from University Hospital. In addition, the UWOTD supports three non-physician Surgical Recovery Specialists, who are ACIN certified to recover abdominal organs and serve as assistants and/or primary surgeons in the organ recovery process. UWOTD also operates, in partnership with Meriter Hospital in Madison, a centralized recovery center (CRC), where most of our neurologically deceased donors are transported for recovery.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 12th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The department provides a robust infrastructure of services including academic resources such as the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides clinical trial coordinator support for clinical trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post- award support.
