A Brief Overview
The Yoga Therapist will facilitate individual and group yoga therapy for patients, provide clinical mentorship to Yoga Instructors, contribute to program development, research, and education efforts. The Yoga Therapist will apply principles and practices of yoga therapy as part of the multidisciplinary team to optimize care of patient, promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management, and yoga practices for individuals or small groups to eliminate, reduce, and/or manage symptoms that cause suffering, improve function, and improve health and well-being.

What you will do

1. Clinical

  • Complete patient intake and assessments; develop and implement a self-empowering therapeutic plan appropriate to the client's needs and goals
  • Monitor client progress through the course of treatment, reevaluate and adapt the treatment plan at required intervals
  • Apply evidence-based practices to achieve the most effective short and long-term results
  • Provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care
  • Utilize the Panchamaya Model and modify practices of yoga therapy to support the patient and help improve their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health
  • Employ yoga practices such as asana (postures), pranayama (breath work), relaxation, meditation, mudra (energetic gestures and seals), bandha (energy locks), mantra (sacred sounds), mindfulness, bhavana (imagery), sankalpa (affirmation/intention), yogic lifestyle, and dietary advice according to the yoga therapy framework, education in yoga philosophy, and other practices in the yoga tradition
  • Ensure patient safety; modify practice by verbal instruction and/or consented touch as deemed competent to enact in training
  • Consult with the patient's specialty and/or primary care providers, as necessary, work with other treatment partners in a coordinated, comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach
  • For group yoga therapy, complete intake and assessment for each client in the group prior to commencing the class, personalize the practice(s) based on the individual assessment, and reassess at regular intervals throughout a series of classes as applicable
  • Educate patients and caregivers on treatment goals and therapy plan; instruct patients and caregivers on activities to follow while in hospital or at home; document instruction; and evaluate ongoing compliance and understanding
  • Maintain detailed and complete records of session documentation in electronic medical record; document patients' evaluation results, objective status, progress towards goals, treatment plan, and recommendations in compliance with documentation requirements of the hospital and accrediting associations
  • Conducts visits/classes outside of the hospital setting including telehealth visits, virtual classes, home-visits, or in the community.
  • Adhere to local, state and federal laws, regulations and statutes.
  • Adhere to program guidelines. Maintains and follows standard quality, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.

2. Education & Training

  • Provide clinical education and mentorship to Yoga Instructors
  • Maintain current skills: attends conferences and in-services within department and hospital as appropriate to enhance professional development
  • Contribute and disseminate the current Yoga Therapy body of knowledge via presentations, in-services / learning opportunities both in and out of the department when appropriate
  • Conduct formal and informal educational programs for hospital staff, students and community; develop and maintain a portfolio of educational materials for clinicians and patients, using print and non-print media

3. Program Development

  • Actively engage in building utilization of the Integrative Health Program's services
  • Participate in research activities as required
  • Contribute to department policy/procedures via program development, evaluation forms and clinical guidelines when appropriate.
  • Maintains productivity and fiscal responsibility in the utilization/provision of services
  • Lead or engage in relevant workgroups to meet program strategy goals

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years working in healthcare delivery system Required
  • Trauma-informed/sensitive yoga training Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and negotiation.
  • Outstanding communication skills. Ability to clearly communicate with patients, families and providers. Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to represent the Center/Program within and beyond institution.
  • Ability to handle confidential materials and matters.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to function efficiently and professionally with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to quickly learn new procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Yoga Therapy Certification - International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT) - upon hire - Required and
  • Registered Yoga Teacher 500 (RYT 500) - Yoga Alliance - upon hire - Required and
  • Registered Children's Yoga Teacher (RCYT) - Yoga Alliance - upon hire - Required
