Primary Purpose of the Position |
The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Winston-Salem State University (
WSSU) invites applications for a nine-month, full-time tenure track faculty position in the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor beginning August 2025. Exceptional candidates with a proven record of scholarly achievement, research funding, and leadership will be considered for an endowed professorship.
Successful candidates will teach a variety of introductory and upper-division biology courses, which include General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Histology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology. The teaching assignments will include undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses for biology majors, health sciences programs, nursing majors, and general education biology courses for non-majors. All candidates are expected to serve as academic advisors and mentors. The successful candidates will produce innovative scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline, present at professional conferences, and engage in procuring extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams. Service expectations include participation in departmental, College, and university service as well as engage in service to the professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community.
The Department of Biological Sciences provides programs for students in Biology resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree. Biological Sciences also supports other schools/departments in the University with courses needed by their students. These include Health and Exercise Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Physical Therapy and Nursing. |

We seek exceptional candidates who demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching biological sciences to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The following qualifications and skills are required:
- A Ph.D. in biology or related biological sciences (physiology, molecular biology) from an accredited graduate program
- Demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate courses in biological sciences
- A minimum of two years' post-doctoral training experience
- Experience using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System
- Experience using emerging technologies in teaching and learning that engages students in the learning process
- Illustrate evidence of designing a quality sustainable research program
- Evidence of mentoring students in undergraduate research experiences and/or internships and service-learning opportunities
- Demonstrate a record of peer-reviewed publications in biological sciences or demonstrate the potential for publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed publications
- Demonstrate research experience and the potential for attracting external funding
- Demonstrate activities that show professional growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and professional conferences related to disciplines within biological sciences
- Demonstrate the ability to participate in transdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations with colleagues at the university, across universities, or within the broader public
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills

WSSU seeks committed and engaged faculty members for the Department of Biological Sciences who will perform specific duties at a high level. These duties include but are not limited to the following:
Teaching and Advising
- Teach undergraduate biology courses primarily face-to-face but should have the ability to teach in both online and hybrid modalities
- Construct detailed course syllabi
- Facilitate high quality, engaging instruction
- Leverage various technologies (e.g., Canvas, EAB Navigate) to communicate regularly with students, monitor student progress, and provide feedback on student success outcomes
- Engage with students during mandatory office hours each week
- Serve as an academic advisor
- Work collaboratively to enhance the strengths of our biology curricular and co-curricular programs
Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
- Articulate a research agenda that aligns with the mission of the university and the academic unit.
- Produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals in the biological sciences discipline and those focused on the teaching and learning of biological sciences in higher education
- Facilitate presentations at well-respected local, state, national and international professional conferences, and meetings within the discipline
- Cooperate with faculty across the university and external to the institution as well as with professionals across the nation to form interdisciplinary teams that procure sponsored research
University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement
- Attend departmental, College, and University-level meetings
- Serve on departmental-level committees
- Serve on College- and university-level committees
- Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations
- Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities
