Physicist, Proton Therapy

The Gordon-Browne Proton Therapy Center (GBPTC) is a cutting-edge machine utilizing an ultra compact proton therapy unit installed within an existing high-rise building. The continued success of the department requires a motivated physicist capable of working in a patient care critical environment. The Proton Therapy Physicist oversees upgrades, performs alignment and tuning, data analysis, and performs troubleshooting and testing of highly complex equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead efforts for selected upgrades including design, feasibility analysis, documentation, testing, and technical commissioning
  • The individual will be encouraged to participate in developmental efforts on various clinical physics projects and propose new opportunities
  • Provide expert troubleshooting
  • Align and test equipment following repairs
  • Create procedures
  • Adhere to processes defined by the quality management system
  • Help to improve documentation
  • May be involved in upgrades and other projects related to clinical innovation and research within the Department of Radiation Oncology

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

The position requires a sound basic knowledge of accelerator and proton therapy operations and high levels of communication and multidisciplinary teamwork. The person must be able to work independently and in collaboration with other professionals. A knowledge of building engineering systems compliant with IEC standards and regulatory requirements is preferred. The person should have good basic computer skills including data analysis and software development. Knowledgeable in health care informatics-including the resources, devices and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data.

EDUCATION
PhD degree in engineering, physics, medical physics, or in a related field is preferred. Master's Degree required.

EXPERIENCE

At least 3 years hands-on proton therapy experience, preferably with cyclotrons, synchrotrons, beamlines, nozzles, gantries, control systems, ionization chambers and QA detectors, data analysis, and/or building QA software tools. Experience with engineering and software standards of practice is preferred.
Licenses and Credentials

EXPERIENCE
Clinical experience 2-3 years required and Experience in treatment planning and planning systems, particularly RayStation 0-1 year preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS
Most work performed in a clinical or experimental environment. Night and weekend work sometimes required. Will occasionally be required to work in a radiation environment which is protected and monitored according to federal and state regulations.
